Intriguing and informative insight into the issue of women working in the UK's waste management sector.

While working in waste management may be, traditionally, considered a role for men, a growing proportion – currently some 27% – of the UK’s waste management workforce are female.   According to the international network of waste professionals and experts, The International Solid Waste Associa...

Waste King bucks the trend by investing and growing

Waste King, the UK-wide waste management specialist, is bucking the trend within the UK waste industry for previously independent companies being subsumed into European-owned conglomerates. According to Waste King’s Managing Director, Glenn Currie, Waste King has received two such offers to be acquired – but has rejected both of them.

“Our strategy is to increase investment and push our plans for growth and expansion,” he said. “Our particular initiative for 2025 is to plant a forest to offset our carbon footprint associated with collecting and processing the increasing amount of waste we’re handling for our customers.”

This strategy has seen Waste King open a second office and increase its head count by 75 per cent in the last year. It’s also added four new vehicles to its fleet as part of its plan to grow to turning over some £20m a year.

“We’re well on the way to achieving that figure,” commented Waste King’s Operations Director, Andy Cattigan. “Within the last two years, we’ve seen our annual revenue increase by some 133 per cent.

“Each month, Waste King currently manages and successfully accomplishes some 63,930 movements from wheelie bins, skips, man-and-van rubbish clearance, grabs and road sweepers. All this contributes to the very many tonnes of waste that Waste King has collected and processed in the last year.”

This level of business encouraged Waste King to build new offices at its local waste transfer station to expand the site so that waste can be recycled more efficiently. It’s also carried out improvements to its weighbridge for articulated lorries.

In addition, Waste King continues to invest in a new technology system which monitors and reports, in-depth, on weights, waste streams and collections and then analyses sites and waste disposal methods – identifying such things as why rubbish has increased in some locations or why areas are frequently left with rubbish.

“We aim to offer our clients value for money and we meet their needs through understanding those needs as a result of engaging in excellent communications with them,” Andy Cattigan added. “Our monitoring and reporting enables traceability and accountability of every movement of waste material from the point of collection to its destination.”

“While we’re doing more than ever before for more customers than ever before, on a national scale, we’re confident that we can weather the business pressures and the offers to merge or be acquired,” said Glenn Currie.

Efficient, Effective and Eco-friendly Care for Care Homes

Using Recycling Pods from waste management specialist, Waste King, is making TLC Group’s care homes demonstrably more eco-friendly. Since beginning to use the recycling Pods in April 2024, TLC has reduced its carbon footprint across all its sites by 50% - and it can show that 98% of all its bulk waste in now recycled.

The solution is also proving popular with TLC staff because they can securely lock away waste – preventing any unauthorised access to the waste. The staff are also discovering that Recycling Pods are a highly effective way to store all types of waste in a more professional manner.

TLC Group (TLC) provides nursing, dementia, residential and respite care through care homes in North London, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Surrey. It’s accredited as an ‘Investors in People’ platinum organisation and its homes are registered and regulated by the Care Quality Commission.

Like many care home organisations, TLC had used skips to collect its homes’ waste. However, it wasn’t keen on local residents putting items into the skips that didn’t originate from the care homes - and it didn’t want bulk waste to be visible in skips that were on its sites.

Searching for a more efficient and sensitive way of storing waste as well as having this waste removed, TLC discovered Waste King’s Recycling Pods. It realised these Pods present a more professional and ‘tasteful’ solution to storing and disposing of waste – not least residents’ clothing and other personal items which, when put into a skip, could remain visible to others and, thus, in some, sensitive, circumstances could cause distress to family members.

After completing a waste management consultation with TLC, Waste King supplied nine Pods in various TLC locations – with the first of these Pods being installed in April 2024. Waste King is also providing its ‘man-in-a-van’ services for each of TLC’s care homes, as and when this service is required.

Waste King’s managing director, Glenn Currie, commented, “Skips are a popular solution to collecting waste but they can be problematic if you’re going to put items such as mattresses, fridges and upholstery in them. Now it’s using Recycling Pods, TLC is saving money by having one price for efficient and effective waste management at all its homes – and it’s saving time by contracting with one supplier.

Waste King’s in-depth monitoring and reporting suite reports on weights, waste streams and collections and then analyses all the sites and waste disposal methods – identifying such things as why rubbish has increased in some locations or why areas are frequently left with rubbish. Each month, Waste King discusses these findings with each site’s designated recycling champion to increase the efficiency of the waste management process.

“We aim to offer our clients value for money and we meet their needs through understanding those needs as a result of engaging in excellent communications with them,” he added. “Our monitoring and reporting enables traceability and accountability of every movement of waste material from the point of collection to its destination.”

On a dull, damp, drizzly autumnal day, it was a real tonic to be able to have lunch at the Brohmon Restaurant, in Chapel Hill, Stansted Mountfitchet. ‘British Food Fortnight’ provided the rationale for the restaurant to open, specially, at lunchtimes – in addition to its regular evening opening hours.

Available to diners were apéritif mocktails and cocktails, along with red and white wines made with grapes from local vineyards. Also on offer were non-alcoholic drinks to accompany the food – and Masala Chai as a splendid digestif after dining. Among the many Brohmon signature dishes on the menu were Bilathi Murgi Masala (diced breast of chicken in a sauce strongly flavoured with garlic and locally-sourced sundried tomatoes), Keema Matar (minced beef with peas) and the enigmatically titled ‘MIS Special’ (Lamb Henry shoulder cut with a small bone, cooked in a rich spicy sauce) - accompanied by a selection of side dishes including delicious paratha, and a delicate biriyani which bore the tell-tale signs of being ‘homemade’ rather than ‘mass-produced’.

While the restaurant celebrated British Food Fortnight – since ‘curry’ has become a staple part of the British diet over the past 60 and more years – what Brohmon offers is far superior to a ‘traditional, British culinary curry experience’. The most obviously ‘British’ part of Brohmon’s offering is that the ingredients for much of its food and drink are grown and sourced locally – from local farmers and butchers, vineyards, brewers and distilleries. However, the cuisine itself is authentically and enthusiastically sub-continental. For example, the fish in a spiced sauce was reminiscent of – and bore comparison with - a similar dish I’d previously only experienced in an up-market Mumbai restaurant.

If you want a ‘quick vindaloo’ after an evening’s heavy drinking, pick a traditional curry house. If you want a diverse, extremely tasty gastronomic experience that will envelop and pique your taste buds, then the individual and unique offerings of Brohmon can delight you – and leave you wanting to return.
