Disability News Service reports that Alan Milburn swore at journalist John Pring and nudged him after being asked about safeguarding in his review of young people and work.

The interim report is not a final set of proposals. But any plans to support disabled young people into work must take account of chronic illness, fluctuating conditions and the risk of harm.

A study found an association between Work Capability Assessment reassessments and increased su***de rates. It did not prove that the assessments directly caused those deaths, but the finding deserves serious attention.

Employment can offer opportunity. Support must respect people’s health, capacity and informed choice. Safeguarding should come first.

Disabled people should not have to compete for support

Disabled people do not all have the same needs or the same lives. But that should never become a reason to make us compete for help.

At Labour conference, Pat McFadden called welfare reform “the moral crusade of our times”. The Guardian has since reported that ministers are considering removing the Universal Credit health element for under-25s and creating a separate PIP system for younger people that could reduce or withdraw some entitlements. The report says those with “the most severe and debilitating disabilities” would be protected. These are reported options, not settled policy.

When support is discussed in terms of age or who is “severe enough”, it risks creating a line between disabled people who are seen as deserving and those expected to manage without help.

I cannot say that division is the intention. But research suggests that media framing can affect how people judge disabled benefit claimants. We should take that risk seriously.

Good employment support matters. It cannot replace the help people need with the extra costs of disability. We should not have to argue that another disabled person matters less for our own needs to count.

We need a system that recognises different needs and protects people from poverty. Disabled people must be heard when decisions about our lives are being made.
