As the sun came out to play this weekend, so too did many of us! Spending time in nature being physically active has a wide range of proven mental and physical health benefits …but not everyone is able to easily access the great outdoors. A Public Health review in 2020 found that the groups who most infrequently get outside were the elderly; those in poor health; people of lower socioeconomic status; those with a physical disability; ethnic minorities; and people living in deprived areas. We’re working to readdress that balance through our climbing and activity charitable programmes and we’re asking for your support. If you enjoyed the healing power of nature/activity this weekend, make a contribution to The Ledge on behalf of someone who’s not yet had the opportunity to find their wild. Keep Watching

As of today Friday 16th Oct, we have actioned a revamped plan to bring climbers and adventure sports people in the Highlands a world-class modern Climbing Gym and Training centre for adventure sports enthusiasts in the North of Scotland.

Over the coming week or so we will be able to share more information and then be asking the community to support the plan.

It’s been a long lockdown and we have been working hard to adapt to the changes we all face. Prepare for good news.

Hello, we are gearing up as we approach our anticipated announcement of the start of work, The Ledge Charity is seeking additional expertise on the Board of Trustees. Below is the full text of this request. Please circulate to anyone who you think may be able to help the charity as we enter an exciting and busy year. The Charity is seeking skilled individual(s) for the board of Trustees.

The Ledge SCIO was established on 27th June 2017, to deliver and then manage The Ledge Climbing Gym and adventure sports training centre. This will be built at Inverness Marina. The Ledge is a charity registered in Scotland. Scottish Charity SC047530

The stated aims of The Ledge SCIO are:
“The provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended”
And the advancement of public participation in sport by:-
(i) creating a fund to support low cost access to sports facilities and training offered by the organisation to those with specific needs including , but not limited to, disabled sport, youth at risk and persons from remote and small communities;
(ii) the provision of sporting facilities and activities; (ii) encouraging entry into mountain based sports by funding training, equipment purchase, payment for guides and external teaching and instructor services and;
(iii) the promotion of healthy active living through adventure and outdoor sports.
The charity is a single tier SCIO as defined by OSCR the Scottish charities regulator.

The Charity’s ambition in 2020 is to manage the establishment of The Ledge Climbing Gym and supporting sports facilities that include, large scale climbing walls, specialist training areas, gyms and a yoga studio. In this period we will also continue to develop the charity’s “social impact program” and advance partnerships to aid the Social Impact Plan (SIP) delivery. It is anticipated that we will start a 12-month design and building program in March 2020, which should see the centre open to the public in Spring 2021.

Once open, the main business of The Ledge Charity, will be the delivery of our Social Impact Plan, which means offering life enhancing and life skills experiences for the betterment of any individual with a demonstrable need, irrespective of background and ability. At the same time we will be managing an amazing climbing gym worthy of the city and the region.

As a result of the imminent start to the construction works, The Ledge is seeking to expand the Board of Trustees to ensure adequate strategic direction, governance and professional skills are available to support the management and design teams.

The Ledge would welcome applications from individuals with experience in:
· Finance and accountancy;
· Charity governance and 3rd sector fundraising;
· Project management;
· Legal and contractual skills

Whilst an interest in climbing and adventure sports would be useful, it is by no means a prerequisite for consideration. Applications will be welcomed from under-represented groups and preference will be given to applicants who are resident within the Scottish Highlands and able to attend regular Trustees and development meetings. It is expected that during 2020 meetings will be monthly and when the Centre is open, quarterly.
The Trustees role is unpaid but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed within the charity’s policy guidelines. If you wish us to help build an amazing space, see climbing and adventure grow in the Highlands and at the same time change lives for the better, please send a short note of interest to duncan(at)theledgeinverness(dot)com
The closing date for submissions is 5pm on 31st March 2020.
Interviews will take place during April or earlier

A Positive Christmas Update

We are very aware that some time has passed since our last technical update on the project so we’re pleased to bring you some positive news in the run up to Christmas.

The last update mentioned that the building early stage technical design had gone out to tender and we were awaiting news of these submissions. As is often the case when early stage designs go out to the market, the initial tenders came back in at a level, which we felt the charity could not legitimately sustain. Normal, yes but undeniably frustrating as we were keen to make a good start on the build/design before the end of the year.

As a result we have been engaged in a process since late August, of refining the building design, layout and fit-out of the building, which has now become know as the Cube by the design team. We are pleased to say this process has resulted in the team, many of whom have worked beyond the scope of their normal duties, coming up with a design, which we think we can take forward to the next stage of the process.

Happily these refinements have been carried out without us having to lose any of the many sporting and climbing elements proposed for the building.

The current plan is for a 14m high lead wall arena giving 18m routes, a larger and more open modern bouldering wall in its own dedicated space, a training zone with boards and campus set up, a large strength and conditioning space for mountain athletes, a functional fitness gym space for body weight and core workouts, and a yoga studio. Additional facilities include hire and retail spaces, café and craft ale eatery, a hot-desking area for people on the move or anyone looking for a break from their home office or normal work spaces, and a series of rentable business incubator spaces for young companies looking for their first professional workspace. It’s all very exciting and we truly believe it will become the indoor home for outdoors enthusiasts, a climbing training facility and a real community.

So what next? Well, we are now just entering the process where these new designs, costs and refined and developed business plans need to be considered before we can offer a definitive start date. However it feels good and the team are heading into the holidays with the belief that we will be able to offer positive and definitive news before the end of January.

Before we sign off, the Ledge team would like to thank all of the people who have given so much of their time, professional advice - often for free, and for the enthusiasm and encouragement we receive on a daily basis when at the crags and at the wall. It is very much appreciated and really has helped keep our energy levels up during this process.

Have a great Xmas and look forward to an exciting new year.
