The New World of Heritage Railway Coal? 🚂🔥

A huge thank you to Homefire - Isle Of Man Depot for kindly donating a test batch of manufactured smokeless coal for us to trial on our steam locomotives.

For a number of years we have been using Welsh steam coal mined at Ffos-y-fran, which has been an excellent fuel for our engines. Sadly, mining there ceased in 2023, as the Welsh Government continues its move towards a fossil-free future.

So the hunt has been on for a suitable replacement to power our heritage steam locomotives… and this may just be it! We’ll be carrying out trials with this manufactured alternative during 2026 to see how it performs in service.
