Before you log off, honest question...

When something keeps going wrong, do you ever get to why? Or do you fix it and move on, knowing it'll be back?

We had a process where customers kept not following the guidance, and it meant redoing the work about 65% of the time. Everyone assumed people just weren't reading it. So we sat down with it properly, fishbone diagram, a lot of "ok, but why does that happen", and it turned out the guidance arrived too early. It was asking for things people didn't have yet.

Not a people problem, a timing one.

Nobody thinks they've got the hour for that. It's usually cheaper than fixing the same thing every month.

Have a good weekend, you've earned it 👋

👉An hour's drive each way for a meeting that could've been a call.
👉Walking to the printer in the other building.
👉Sending a file round three people so the right one eventually picks it up.
👉Going over to check something in person, again.

None of it feels like waste while you're doing it. It feels like the job. But it has a name in process work, transport and motion, and it adds up fast, in hours and fuel and everyone's day.

You don't have to fix all of it. Noticing it is most of the job.

A client had a 45 page guidance document, but very few people read it and mistakes were made constantly along the way.

We got it to 3 pages, with a few short videos alongside. The difference was people getting what they needed at the actual step, rather than a whole manual up front and the hope they'd remember the relevant bit later.

The "sorry, quick question" messages dropped right off, and the rework dropped with them.

People don't want more guidance. They want what they need, at the right time.

When did you last properly stop and celebrate your progress?

This isn't a passing "that went well" before moving on... Instead, a marked pause, to actually recognise what you've done and how far you've come.

So much of what we call "development" is really just deficit-spotting; the gap, the problem, the thing which needs fixing. It's useful up to a point, but it also misses something important about why most people actually want to grow and develop: they want to feel more confident, more content, more themselves. They have ambitions they want to embrace, not just weaknesses they want to resolve

The Podium stage in Your Hurdles & Beyond™ was built with this in mind. It's a deliberate space to celebrate - not as a nice-to-have at the end of a conversation, but a genuine part of the process to step back, appreciate and celebrate.

Your end goal might have been achieved - if so, AMAZING! Or it might not (yet). Sport has always known this: the personal best in a losing race still gets its moment; the small win mid-competition still gets celebrated. It's not indulgent; it's what makes the next effort possible.

When did you last stand on your podium?

Everyone wants to know where they can put AI. I think that's slightly the wrong place to start.

We had a document editing task that took about 90 minutes every time. We didn't go hunting for somewhere to bolt AI on. We looked at where the time was actually going, then handed over the fiddly part. It came down to 11 minutes, and the people got the rest back for the work that needed an actual brain.

The win wasn't the AI... instead, it was working out which job to give it 😉

What's the task you put off every week because you know how long it's going to take? 🤔

The classic one in HR: someone new joins, so you type their details into the HR system, then payroll, then the IT request, then the spreadsheet someone still swears by. Same person, four times over, because none of the systems talk to each other.

The task itself is fine. It's all the re-typing around it that takes the morning.

Usually the fix is already in the tools you've got, they just need joining up so you enter it once and it lands everywhere it needs to. That's a lot of what I help people with.

What's the one you'd happily never do again?

Back to work today after a break in Switzerland!
I started the morning feeling a bit like this image... but after 15 minutes to plan the day and get my head in gear, I'm focused again!

I’m back from the most wonderful break in ! Time with my family and a rest (although we did pack in a lot!) has been fantastic. A bit of my heart is still there, it’s a very special city and somewhere I’ll definitely visit again 🇨🇭
