Development Pathways Accelerating the realisation of social and economic rights for all through policy advice and services

We are the leading global consultancy specialising in designing and developing social protection systems – one fundamental way that governments can guard people from poverty and vulnerability. Our team has delivered over 150 projects for governments, the UN and many other clients from Brazil to Vietnam since 2010. A British-Kenyan company, we began when Stephen Kidd and Richard Chirchir put their

heads together with a group of like-minded development professionals to change the way countries address poverty, inequality and other key development challenges. Since then, our offices in London and Nairobi have grown considerably and we have recently expanded our work around the globe with our new office in Australia. As our knowledge and experience expands, our mission remains the same: to accelerate the realisation of social and economic rights for all through policy advice and services. What unites our diverse global team, from economists and policy experts to software developers, is our passion to change people’s lives for the better. We deliver on this mission by providing bespoke, evidence-based advice on social policy challenges and solutions that are sustainable and tailored to specific contexts, enabling governments to take informed decisions based on clear objectives and robust analysis.

Last week, we had the opportunity to share our findings from the Evidence Review on Social Protection in the Pacific and Timor-Leste at the AAPS: The Australian Association for Pacific Studies Conference at University of Sydney.

🎤 Our consultant Kate Lanyon headed to Sydney to join Jesse Doyle from Partnerships for Social Protection - P4SP in presenting the findings as part of a diverse panel on wellbeing, health and social protection.

🤝 It has been fantastic to continue working alongside P4SP to share these findings, and to engage with researchers from across the Pacific. Here’s to more opportunities to do so!

Social protection systems are essential for supporting vulnerable populations, including refugees. However, legal constraints, fragmented data, and limited coordination between humanitarian and government programs often hinder refugee inclusion.

In the ongoing effort to build more inclusive and resilient systems across Kenya and the region, CHASP Advisory invites you to a webinar conversation this Friday, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM EAT, focused on:

Join us at the Global Disability Summit in Berlin!

On Wednesday, April 2nd, we will support Jordan's Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (المجلس الأعلى لحقوق الأشخاص ذوي الإعاقة) on a side event through our Shamil technical facility (funded by the UK FCDO in Jordan). If you're at the summit, please drop into the session in Hall 1 at 9 AM.

Stephen Kidd, Principal Social Security Specialist at Development Pathways, will join Dr Muhannad Alazzeh (HCD Secretary General) who will moderate the session, along with expert panellists Salote Biukoto from Fiji's Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection and Pathamavathy Naicker from the South African Social Security Agency.

Together, they will discuss how disability-specific benefits help empower full participation in society and show how they are financially feasible even in resource-constrained settings.

🌟 Our Shamil team supported the National Elderly Strategy 2025-2030 Launch in Jordan today; here are some highlights!

The National Council for Family Affairs المجلس الوطني لشؤون الأسرة, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia - ESCWA, and Shamil hosted a strategic dialogue on advancing support for older persons.

Key discussions centred around:

🔹 Financial security through government programs (Social Security Corporation & National Aid Fund)

🔹 Healthcare access and social services

🔹 Learning from global success stories, including Nepal's universal pension system

🔹 Comprehensive support for elderly families

This marks a significant step forward in Jordan's commitment to developing an inclusive and comprehensive approach to elderly care. The focus on both financial security and healthcare access shows a holistic vision for supporting our older citizens.

Today, on the International Day of Older Persons, let's shine a light on the vital role of old-age pensions in the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

Old-age pensions are the most widespread form of social protection in the Pacific, with the introduction of most schemes beginning in the 2000s.

P4SP's recent research shows that 8 of 14 Pacific nations studied offer elderly benefits funded by the government, often provided universally.

These pensions are not only a lifeline for older persons, helping them age with dignity, but they also promote gender equality.

Universal schemes ensure women receive some level of income security in their later years, regardless of their previous work history or earnings.
