'Artistry: It will soon be evident whether a newcomer has the technique, sense of style and knowledge of the repertoire to fit into a given orchestra. What may surprise some is just how much a re- engagement could hang on non-musical factors. 'It matters to be sociable,' says an experienced Principal Cellist client, 'to fit in. After all, teamwork is what section-playing is all about.'' Please visit 'Orchestral Survival Strategies article'

'Professionalism: When it comes to forging direct contacts with orchestras, it pays to put in research to assess where, musically and temperamentally, you might fit in - in the strange way of things, each orchestra has its own distinctive musical and social culture (thankfully). The good news is that orchestras continue to hold auditions for full time positions and for extra work. To be noticed however you need to prepare your CV and cover letter with care. For example 'go easy on the verbiage. One side of the page is enough, certain things will just stand out. Make sure the information is relevant. In our case we're naturally interested in seeing evidence of experience in smaller chamber ensembles. It's a big help if you can mention the name of someone in the orchestra who knows your playing.'' 'Referees: When preparing your CV and Cover Letter the best referees to use are players, preferably principal players, who work with the orchestra you are writing to. If you are writing to different orchestras and naming different referees for each orchestra you contact, it might be easier to move your referee details to your covering letter rather than having to alter your CV each time.' 'Stand-Out: Fixers receive lots of CV mailings, so to have an impact your CV needs to be concise and informative. For example, avoid padding out your CV with unnecessary details such as repertoire performed and conductors worked with at music college - a professional fixer understands what happens at college.' 'Outreach: Orchestras with active outreach departments value musicians with a portfolio of skills that add value to their instrumental talents. One leading Orchestra Manager says that he looks forward to a future in which orchestral players are ever more deeply embedded in their local communities. 'Having players who not only work in the orchestra but also, say, excite the local community with orchestral outreach projects, play the organ in the local church, or conduct a local orchestra or choir, or even teach or coach ensembles in a local school, means that an orchestra is grounded in the community.' 'Professionalism: 'With each orchestra you need to learn fast how your colleagues behave, and adapt to that,' suggests a leading Newcastle based Trumpeter client. 'Notice if they're quiet or noisy. Don't be the first to pull a book out during rehearsals even if you're not playing for a while. If you like curry and the rest of the section eats Chinese, eat Chinese!'' 'Cold Calling: 'At some stage in your career, you will also probably have to cold call fixers that you want to work for. I've only once swallowed my pride and seriously asked someone for work. But this call opened a few really good avenues for me, which I doubt would have happened had I not made that initial call.'' Please visit 'Networking article'
