That's the 2024 Obstacle Course Racing season wrapped up! My first season wearing a Team GB vest, my first European Championships, first time on a podium (age group!) at the British Championships! 17th female overall in the UK OCR league and 7th 40+ female!
Many thanks again to Herd Sands Paul for the advice & physio, Kris from Move and Mind for the advice and specific training, Louise from Witness The Fitness Bootcamp & Personal Training . for the advice and great sessions and Bev from VC Performance Nutrition & Coaching for the advice on nutrition. Yep, I love advice from people who know a lot more than me!!
Happy to remain in top 20 & top 10 considering the fierce competition....next year will be my 10th year of taking part in OCR - I say "taking part" rather than "competing" because some years I have been too injured to compete, but I've still turned up and taken part because I love it so much.
Competition is a funny thing - is it OK to "be competitive"?
I've struggled a bit with this aspect of myself over the years - aren't I supposed to be a more "zen" sort of person, doing what I do?
Being extremely driven and competitive is necessary when aiming to reach podiums at any level. What drives a person to train in the cold and dark when they could be snuggled in bed? The thought that their competitors are probably out there (works for me!)..
Everyone has to be competitive to some degree, just to get off the sofa and reach for something - what happens in a society when people get used to being given everything they need?
Racing is tough - look at the bleeding knees in the middle photo - you have to be tough mentally to stand on a start line and believe that you should be there.
Being driven and competitive can have its downsides, of course - take it too far and you're no fun at all - forget being sociable, forget staying out partying, forget eating cakes!
In the extreme it can lead to all sorts of bigger issues from eating disorders to situational anxiety, not feeling "good enough" and panic attacks...(yep, yep, yep!)
Sometimes it seems "easier" to give up on a goal but I think that as long as you can keep making baby steps in the right direction you will be rewarded for your efforts.
So, if you have a competitive attitude (like me!) it can mean walking a knife edge and "embracing opportunities" to confront unconscious aspects of yourself in order to keep moving forwards - and of course this can be in any area of life at all, being competitive with yourself (you of today vs you of the past!) can also be a meaningful way to reframe a mindset - I know that the "me" of 11 years ago would never have dared to imagine standing on a British Championship podium for any sport and that's a fact!
If you are struggling with any "aspects" of your personality that you're not sure what to do with (or even wish didn't exist!) then do get in touch - I can show you how to make them work FOR you so that the struggle can end x
