Tree of the Month: Hawthorn
Next up in our Tree of the Month series is hawthorn — a small tree with big history, meaning, and benefits.
Fun fact:Hawthorn is often called the “heartbeat of the hedgerow”. It’s one of the best trees for supporting wildlife, providing flowers for pollinators, shelter for birds, and berries (haws) well into winter. It grows across the UK from Brecon Beacons, to country lanes of England to the wild Scottish Landscape.
Old wives’ tales & folklore:Traditionally known as the May Tree, hawthorn was associated with protection, fertility, and boundaries. It was believed to guard land and homes but bringing hawthorn indoors was said to invite bad luck! A reminder of how deeply this tree was woven into rural life and storytelling.
Why we love it:Hardy, generous, and deeply connected to landscape restoration — hawthorn is a cornerstone species for hedgerows and regenerative planting.
PS. We’ll have a large quantity of hawthorn available this coming year, so if you’re planning larger planting projects or landscape-scale work, we’d love to hear from you now. Early orders very welcome!
