Taking over the out-of-home poster, one graffiti at a time 🎨👊!
Just visited the "Women in Revolt!" exhibition at TATE Britain, which showcases feminist interventions to ad billboards around London in the 80s.
Jil Posener's work and photos documenting these interventions stood out for me.
Living in le***an squats, Posener and friends would graffiti over sexist adverts and sell prints as postcards to raise funds for radical causes.
Posener writes, 'It was a way of taking over the poster. By writing angry but humorous graffiti, we were also making the point that ad agencies don't have the monopoly on wit.'
A very punk movement activism sample, indeed 😂.
Although we've come far in the ad industry, sexism still exists and has evolved. Let's continue to challenge and change it.
