📦 SELLING ON ETSY, EBAY, VINTED OR AMAZON?

Then this Budget update is worth knowing about! 👀

From October 2027, new VAT rules are due to change how VAT is dealt with on certain sales made through online marketplaces.

Under the new rules, online marketplaces will become responsible for collecting and accounting for VAT on qualifying sales made by UK businesses through their platforms.

💡 So what does that actually mean?

If you run a business selling through an online marketplace, the platform may deal with the VAT on qualifying sales rather than you collecting and paying that VAT to HMRC in the usual way.

But — and this is important — it doesn't mean every person selling something on Vinted or eBay suddenly has to pay VAT! 🙌

👗 Selling your own unwanted clothes or belongings?
That's very different from operating a business.

📦 Buying or making products specifically to resell for profit?
You may be trading, and different tax rules can apply.

🏪 Already running an online business?
You'll want to understand how the new marketplace VAT rules could affect your pricing, bookkeeping and VAT records.

And remember: VAT and Income Tax are two different things.

There's plenty of time before October 2027, but getting your bookkeeping right now makes life considerably easier when tax rules change.

👩‍💻 SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS – THERE WAS ACTUALLY SOME GOOD NEWS IN THE BUDGET!

Let's make it simple 👇

💰 TRADING ALLOWANCE

The tax-free trading allowance is set to increase from £1,000 to £3,000 from 6 April 2027.

That's particularly useful for people earning a smaller amount from a side hustle or self-employment.

🏪 BUSINESS RATES

There is additional support for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in England.

The government says around 70,000 more businesses in these sectors will be taken out of business rates altogether following an increase in the Small Business Rate Relief threshold.

🚗 BUSINESS MILEAGE

And another useful one…

From April 2027, the mileage rate above the first 10,000 business miles is increasing from 25p to 35p per mile.

Sometimes Budget announcements sound like a wall of tax jargon. 😵‍💫

But buried inside are changes that can make a genuine difference to small businesses.

And that's why I'll keep breaking them down!

🏠 LANDLORDS… THIS ONE MIGHT STING!

One of the big tax changes announced in the Budget affects property income.

From 6 April 2027, separate Income Tax rates will apply to property income in England, Wales and Northern Ireland:

🏠 Basic rate: 24%
🏠 Higher rate: 44%
🏠 Additional rate: 49%

So if you receive taxable rental income, you could find yourself paying more tax on your property profits.

⚠️ And remember…

Tax is generally calculated on your taxable rental profit, not simply the rent that lands in your bank account.

That's why keeping accurate records of your allowable property expenses is so important.

If you're a landlord, 2027 might sound a long way away — but it's worth understanding what the change could mean for your numbers before it arrives.

💷 BUDGET MADE SIMPLE: MINIMUM WAGE IS GOING UP!

Employ staff? This one's for you 👇

From 1 April 2027, the National Living Wage for workers aged 21+ will increase to:

💰 £13.21 per hour

That's a 3.9% increase.

Sounds simple enough… but for employers, remember it's not just the hourly wage you need to budget for.

Higher wages can also mean increased:

➡️ Employer National Insurance
➡️ Pension contributions
➡️ Holiday pay
➡️ Overtime costs
➡️ Overall payroll costs

📌 My advice?

Don't wait until March to see what it does to your numbers.

Start building the increase into your 2027 budgets and cash-flow forecasts now, particularly if you're in industries such as hair & beauty, hospitality, retail or other sectors with several employees around minimum wage.

A small increase per hour can become a much bigger annual cost when multiplied across your whole team.

💷 THE BUDGET 2026 – WITHOUT THE JARGON! 💷

The Budget has been announced… and if your first thought was Okay, but what does any of that actually mean for me?” 😵‍💫

Here are some of the key points in plain English 👇

💷 Minimum wage is going up
From April 2027, the National Living Wage will increase to £13.21 per hour.

🏠 Landlords – take note
From April 2027, the tax rates applying to property income will increase by 2 percentage points.

💰 Savings income is changing too
Tax rates applying to savings income will also increase by 2 percentage points from April 2027.

🏦 Your ISA allowance stays
The annual ISA allowance remains at £20,000.

⛽ Fuel duty remains frozen
Some welcome news for motorists – no additional fuel duty increase.

⚡ Help with energy costs
Eligible households are set to receive further support with energy costs in 2027, alongside measures aimed at reducing bills.

🛍️ Selling through online marketplaces?
Changes are coming to the way VAT is collected on certain sales made through online marketplaces from October 2027.

🏢 Businesses investing in equipment
There are changes coming to capital allowances, so if you're planning a significant purchase for your business, it may be worth looking at the timing.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parental support
Parental pay is being expanded to cover more parents, including some self-employed fathers and partners.

📌 The important bit…

You don't need to understand every line of the Budget.

You just need to understand the bits that affect YOU and YOUR BUSINESS.

And that's where your accountant comes in! 🙋‍♀️

Over the next few days I'll be breaking down some of the changes in more detail – without the complicated tax jargon!

Haven’t been putting money aside for your tax bill? Take a breath. You still have time to make a plan.

If you get your Self Assessment done now, you’ll know what you’re likely to owe. That gives you November, December and January to save towards the 31 January payment deadline.

You may not be able to put the whole amount aside in one go, but a clear figure lets you work out what you need to save each week or month. That’s far easier than opening an unexpected bill in January. 😬

And remember: filing your return early doesn’t mean paying the tax early.

If your paperwork is still sitting in a bag, folder or inbox, send me a message. Let’s find out where you stand while there’s still time to plan.

Unpopular opinion: leaving your Self Assessment until January is more stressful than the tax bill itself. 👀

Every year, January arrives and suddenly everyone needs missing receipts, forgotten income figures and answers from HMRC *right now*.

Getting your return sorted early doesn’t mean paying your tax early. It means knowing what you owe and having time to plan for it before the 31 January payment deadline.

So be honest: which one are you?

✅ “Mine’s already done.”
📁 “I’ve got everything together… somewhere.”
😬 “January Laura can deal with it.”

If you’d like your Self Assessment taken off your to-do list email us today at [email protected]. My paperwork deadline for existing clients is 31 October.
