MailerLite tips, simple systems, and support that actually makes sense. Hello, I'm Hannah, tech VA + email nerd. My aim is to help freelancers & service-based businesses get their email systems sorted (without the tech stress). Hannah Swierstra, Founder | What the Tech & Balance VA Services

Double opt-in is one of those settings that probably never think to check. I’m going to guess because you’re here thinking “what the tech is double opt-in”?

It’s an extra confirmation step before someone joins your list.

They fill in your sign up form, click submit, and instead of landing straight into your active email list, they get an email asking them to click a link to confirm they really do want in.

Only once they’ve clicked that link are they actually subscribed.

And if they never click that link, or see that email, they sit in no-mans land of unconfirmed. Which means you can’t email them at all.

So someone can fill in your form, think they’ve signed up, tell you they’ve signed up, and never show up on your active list. All because they missed one email sitting in their spam folder.

Double opt-in is often sold as a GDPR requirement. It isn’t. While it is deemed “best practice”, it’s genuinely optional and for most (all) of us, it’s just a barrier between a keen new subscriber and your list.

On MailerLite, it’s switched on as standard for every new form and landing page you create, so do go check it.

My take? In case you didn’t realise yet…turn it off!

Do you use double opt-in? Or have you had the “but I definitely signed up” mystery and never known why? Tell me below, I want to hear.

PS. How many times do I say the word double?! 😳

What the actual tech?

I named my business What the Tech partly for the play on words, and partly because it’s the exact phrase going through most people’s heads when they open up the systems they don’t quite get.

You understand all the words on their own. Automation. Trigger. Segment. Open rate. But put them together and you’re left staring at a screen wondering what the tech is actually going on.

So I’ve created a new series called…What the Tech is…

Genius I know!

What the tech is email marketing? What the tech is an automation? What the tech is a trigger?

It’ll be a mix of talking heads and carousels, roughly weekly.

Let me know - what’s the bit of email tech that’s currently bending your brain? Comment below or drop me a DM with your trickiest question 👇🏼

Choosing an email marketing platform isn't about finding the best one on some “Industry Insider” blog, it's about finding the one that fits where your business is now and where it's heading.

Before make a decision here are a few questions worth asking:

💌 Are landing pages and forms included?

💌 Does it send a welcome email automatically?

💌 How many automations can you build?

💌 Are there subscriber limits? What happens to the price when you hit the next limit?

💌 Can you tag or group your subscribers?

💌 Would you actually enjoy using it day to day?

You might not need every feature from day one but being able to create a couple of ways for people to sign up along with automated emails, will really help make email that much easier.

And if trying before you but/commit is your thing, then don’t be afraid to take advantage of the free trials out there - just remember to cancel them if you don’t like the platform!

I've written a full breakdown of how to think this through (plus my own recommendation) on the blog. Comment PLATFORM and I’ll ping you the link.

Did you know your very first email to a new subscriber can make or break their whole experience with you? It’s not about flashy templates or clever tricks—it’s about building trust from the very start. That welcome message is your best chance to set the tone, answer questions, and help people feel seen (not just sold to).

This month, in our free masterclass, I’ll show you exactly how to craft a welcome email that actually works—so your readers stick around and look forward to hearing from you, not reaching for the ‘unsubscribe’ button. Want to know what really matters (and what you can skip)? Registration opens soon—watch this space for details!

How well do you actually know the people on your email list? Not just their names, but what drew them to your business in the first place, and what they’re hoping you’ll deliver next.

If your answer is somewhere between “sort of?” and “not a clue”, you’re definitely not alone. Most solopreneurs start out just grateful anyone’s signing up—but understanding why those subscribers joined is the secret to emails that actually get read (and acted on).

In our upcoming free masterclass, I’ll show you how to organise your subscribers in MailerLite, get clear on their motivations, and tailor your emails so they land with the right people at the right time. No jargon, no faff, just practical steps you can use straight away.

Ready to move from guesswork to confidence? Details out soon—keep an eye out if you want your email list to work harder (and smarter) for your business.

Ever Googled an answer and ended up more confused than when you started? You’re not alone. At Balance VA Services, I know what it’s like to feel tangled in tech—especially when the so-called ‘simple’ fixes turn out to be anything but.

That’s exactly why I’m here: to offer practical, plain-English support for small business owners who’d rather spend time building their business than deciphering jargon or banging their head against a keyboard. No question is too daft, too basic or too niche. In fact, I’d bet I’ve asked it myself at some point (and probably sworn about it too).

If you’re stuck—whether it’s a vanishing landing page, a MailerLite mystery, or a system that just won’t play ball—get in touch. Consider me your friendly, no-nonsense support line. Let’s untangle it together, and get you feeling confident again.

This coming week, I’ll be sharing more practical tips and honest stories to help you feel confident—not confused—about your tech. If you’re feeling stuck, you’re not alone. And if you’re ready for a bit of support, you know where to find me.

Let’s tackle it together, one manageable step at a time.
