When clients pay late, it's easy to put it down to them.

They forgot. Their accounts department is slow. They've got cash flow problems of their own.

Sometimes that's true. But sometimes it's you.

Why do clients pay late? The reasons might surprise you. Some come down to your client. Some come down to you. Here's the full picture.

Most people know we write Ts & Cs for small businesses. Fewer know that we also review contracts when a client insists you sign their terms instead of your own.

When that contract runs to several pages of legal language, knowing what you're actually agreeing to, and where the clauses don't work in your favour, isn't always straightforward. That's exactly where we can help.

Nikki of Designs Like These recently asked us to review a lengthy contract on her behalf. We proposed edits to several key clauses, and most of them were accepted by the client's legal department.

"...which was a brilliant result and a great relief."

If a client has sent you their contract and you're not sure it's working in your favour, send us a message.

A tale of two networking events this morning, and events 4 & 5 for me for the week!

A fantastic panel discussion at Big Breakfast at all about Swindon's reputation Vs reality. Great to hear more about Swindon's bid for City of Culture.

Then on to the event at the Leonardo Hotel, Swindon for more informal networking just across the road for the site where the new theatre entertainment centre will be built.

We love being part of the diverse, positive and proactive business community in Swindon.

One week until the early bird price closes for Get a Grip on Your Cash Flow.

By the end of the day you'll understand what late payment is really costing your business, feel more confident talking about money with clients, and leave with specific actions you can implement straight away.

The day covers everything from payment terms and processes that support faster payment, to having the conversations that actually move things forward, to your legal rights when they don't. It's interactive, practical, and designed for small business owners with no finance background.

£150 + VAT if you book by 30th April, rising to £180 + VAT after that. Lunch included. Places are limited.

Thursday 21st May, Castledown Business Park, Ludgershall, Wiltshire.

Getting paid late is frustrating. Most business owners know that. What they often don't realise is that it costs them much more than they think.

We've updated this blog with the latest research. If you've ever told yourself late payment isn't really a big problem for your business, this might change your mind.

We are probably all aware of the tangible costs to our businesses of late payments, but what about those costs that are more difficult to measure, hidden out of sight. Here we look at the true costs of late payments.

You've built a business you're proud of.

You work hard, you deliver, and you're good at what you do.

So why does getting paid still feel like the hardest part?

On 21st May I'm running a full day workshop in Wiltshire specifically for small business owners who are done with accepting late payment as just part of the deal. We'll work through what it's really costing you, the conversations you need to be having, and what to put in place so it stops happening.

It's a practical day with plenty of time to ask questions about your own situation. Lunch is included.

Early bird tickets are £150 + VAT until 30th April. Link in bio to book.

Considering outsourcing your credit control raises questions.

Will clients think you've sent in the debt collectors?
Will it damage the relationships you've worked hard to build?
Are you too small?
Can you justify the cost?

These are exactly the right questions to ask before making a decision. We've answered them honestly, including being straight about when outsourcing isn't the right thing to do.

Only 7% of people read Ts & Cs before agreeing to them. So if nobody reads them, why bother having them for your business?

Because when a client decides halfway through that they'd like the premium service for the basic price, or remembers your initial conversation completely differently to how you do, or disputes your payment terms because nobody ever spelled them out clearly, you have something in writing that you both agreed to. Whether they read them or not.

A few lines at the bottom of an invoice or a verbal agreement won't do the same job. A properly written set of Ts & Cs sets the foundations for the relationship as well as protecting your business, and the question isn't whether you can afford to have them. It's whether you can afford not to.

If you decide not to draw up Terms & Conditions for your business you are setting yourself up for a great deal of trouble in the future. Here's why.
