Discovery of Hawaii
In January 1778, Cook’s ships became the first recorded Europeans to reach the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the "Sandwich Islands".
Mapping the Alaskan Coastline
Cook thoroughly charted the western coast of North America, from Oregon all the way through the Bering Strait.
Searching for the Northwest Passage:
The crew navigated into the Arctic Circle to find a northern sea route to Europe. They reached as far as 70 degrees North before impenetrable walls of ice forced them to turn back.
Cook's Death in Kealakekua Bay:
After returning to Hawaii to repair storm damage to a ship's mast, relations with the native population soured. Cook was killed during a violent dispute over a stolen rowboat on February 14, 1779.
