🌿 May 1st – A Celebration Rooted in History.

Long before modern calendars, the 1st of May marked the ancient festival of Beltane here in Britain, a celebration of renewal, light, and the turning of the seasons.

Bonfires were lit across the countryside, homes were decorated with fresh greenery, and communities gathered to welcome summer. It was a time of preservation too, protecting livestock, safeguarding harvests, and honouring traditions passed carefully from one generation to the next.

Do You Know The Difference Between a Loveseat, Settee & Tête-à-Tête?

A Loveseat seats two people side-by-side and is Upholstered, compact sofa (typically 48–72 inches wide)
(Term 'LoveSeat' became common in the 19th century)

Settee is an earlier term (17th–18th century) and usually wooden framed with exposed legs and arms. It can seat two or more and is more formal and architectural in design.

Tête-à-Tête (Courting Chair)
A distinctive S-shaped or double-curved form
with two seats that share a central armrest.
Designed for conversation while maintaining propriety that was popular in 19th-century Victorian society.

🪵 Why We Use Old Woods in Antique Repairs 🪵

When restoring antique furniture, new wood just won’t do.

Older pieces were made from slow-grown timbers that have a depth, grain, and character you simply can’t replicate today. That’s why we carefully source and reuse old, reclaimed woods when making repairs.

Using old wood allows us to:
✔️ Match the original grain and colour
✔️ Ensure the repair ages naturally with the piece
✔️ Respect the history and integrity of the furniture
✔️ Create repairs that are strong and virtually invisible

From replacing damaged sections to strengthening joints, reclaimed timber helps us repair antiques in a way that’s true to their original craftsmanship — not just a quick fix, but a lasting one.
