Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking part in the IOSH “Safety in Numbers” campaign photoshoot at Fluid Ideas in Derby. 📸

It was a fantastic morning meeting great people and fellow health and safety professionals. 👷‍♀️🤝We had some really interesting conversations and shared experiences about our profession and the impact it has in the workplace.

As the Director of A2B Smart Safety, I feel incredibly proud and grateful.

This first year has brought exciting wins, amazing people, new opportunities, but also difficult days, doubts, and challenges - and that’s okay. Building something meaningful takes consistency, resilience, high quality work, trust, and the courage to keep going.

Was your April as exciting as mine? 🌱✨

📈 Welcomed some great new clients this month - it’s amazing to see businesses really taking health & safety seriously and protecting their people, their operations, and their future.

🤝 I’ve also joined the Federation of Small Businesses - excited for what’s ahead! A big thank you to Ray Hickinbottom for guiding me through the process.

🌟 Been working with Fran Ash from Fran Ash Mentoring - such valuable support and a real boost in confidence and direction.

🚁 Visited the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity - huge thank you to Teri Harding and the team. My son is now convinced he’ll be a pilot one day!

🤝 Attended The Health & Safety Event - great conversations, lots of inspiration, and the chance to meet some fantastic professionals. I also had the pleasure of meeting Richard Rick Bate - such an interesting conversation about the Polish community after WWII and how they built their lives in the UK, creating homes, schools, hospitals, and even farms. Truly incredible and something I’ll definitely explore further.

🌱 Also proud to have joined the IOSH Rural Industries Community committee. Excited to be part of a group that’s passionate about making a real difference.

🚨 3 Things That Would Fail an HSE Inspection Instantly

I still see these on sites every week and they’re exactly the kind of issues that can stop a job on the spot 👇

1. No Risk Assessment (or a useless one)
No RA? That’s an immediate red flag.
Got one but it’s generic and doesn’t match the job? That’s just as bad.
➡️ It must be site specific and task specific otherwise it won’t stand up to scrutiny.

2. Poor Control of Contractors
No inductions. No monitoring. No clarity on responsibilities.
➡️ If you’re the client or principal contractor, you’re still accountable.

3. Unsafe Work at Height
Improvised platforms, missing guardrails, no inspection records.
➡️ This is one of the fastest ways to get enforcement action.

💸 And here’s the part most people ignore…
If the Health and Safety Executive finds a material breach, they can charge £188 per hour for their time.
That means a single visit could easily cost £750 - £2,000+ before you even fix the problem.
👉 And that’s not a fine.
It’s a charge for the inspector’s time and it can be applied on top of any enforcement action.
