📢 Attention Schools!

There are important changes coming from September 2026 following the Department for Education's new statutory guidance on supporting children with medical conditions and allergies, which delivers the key elements of Benedict's Law.

Schools will now be expected to:

✅ Have a whole school allergy policy.
✅ Train all staff in allergy awareness.
✅ Keep spare adrenaline auto injectors (AAIs) for emergency use.
✅ Have Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for pupils with allergies.

With allergies becoming increasingly common, ensuring staff know how to recognise and respond to an emergency has never been more important.

☀️ The sun is shining... which means BBQ season is in full swing! 🔥

Before you get the burgers on, take a quick look around your garden.

Is your barbecue:
✔️ On a solid, non-flammable surface?
✔️ Away from fences, sheds, plants and anything that could easily catch fire?
✔️ Positioned safely away from children and pets?

With the recent hot, dry weather, even a small spark can quickly spread.

A few simple checks mean you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the food!

A big thank you to my Tesco Clubcard today... it wasn't collecting points, it was helping remove a bee sting! 🐝🤣

It just goes to show that first aid doesn't always need specialist equipment.

If someone gets stung by a bee, here's what to do:

🐝 If the sting is still in the skin, scrape it away using the edge of a bank card

🧊 Pop a cold compress or wrapped ice pack on the area to help reduce pain and swelling

🚨 Keep an eye out for signs of anaphylaxis such as;
•Difficulty breathing
•Swelling of the face, lips or tongue
•Wheezing

If any of these happen, call 999 immediately. If they have an adrenaline auto injector, help them use it.

Luckily, mine was nothing more than a painful sting and a very useful Clubcard! 😂

You never know when a little bit of first aid knowledge could make all the difference.

No two people learn in exactly the same way… and that's something I always keep in mind when I deliver training.

Women are around 27% less likely to receive CPR from a bystander than men.

Sadly, one of the reasons is that people worry about exposing a woman's chest or touching her inappropriately.

That statistic didn't sit right with me.

So I invested in a female CPR manikin and she now comes to every first aid course I teach.

She always gets people talking, and that's exactly the point.

We discuss:
💚 Where your hands should be placed during CPR.
💚 Why a bra should be removed before using an AED.
💚 Exactly where the AED pads go.
💚 Why saving a life is always more important than worrying about embarrassment.

These conversations help people feel more confident and confidence saves lives.

Let's stop treating b***s as something awkward when someone is fighting for their life.

🚑 I recently delivered an Emergency First Aid at Work course for a local business in Essex after someone experienced a heart attack at work.

The incident left staff feeling shaken because they didn't feel confident they would have known what to do in those crucial first moments.

It really highlights something important... 💚

So many businesses only think about first aid training after something has happened. But what if the training had already been done? The team would have had the skills and confidence to step in, help and know they were doing the right things while waiting for the ambulance.

🚗🩹 Who says first aid training has to be serious all day?

I had a fantastic time delivering an Emergency First Aid at Work course for Vehicle Works in Ixworth recently. There were plenty of laughs, lots of questions and everyone got fully involved. 👏

What I thought was especially brilliant was that it wasn't just the owner, his wife and the team taking part. They'd also invited their daughter and her friend, who had just finished their last year at school. ❤️

First aid really is a skill for life and it's never too early to learn how to help someone in an emergency.

Being surrounded by mechanics meant we couldn't resist putting a few automotive twists on the training! 😄 We joked that chest compressions are all about keeping the pressure up, just like fuel pressure, and that an AED is there to give the heart a jump start. Safe to say there were plenty of smiles throughout the day!

A huge thank you to everyone at Vehicle Works for making me feel so welcome. I hope you never need to use your new skills, but if you do, you'll be ready to make a real difference. 💚
