Move Beyond Pain

Move Beyond Pain We're creating a multi-disciplinary Sports Injuries practice with the understanding that there's more to rehabilitation than simply resolving pain

Movement, or movement dysfunction, is often the limiting factor in both performance and recovery. Complete rehabilitation needs to go beyond symptom relief and tissue healing as these are necessary but inadequate for a full return to high performance.

The Central Governor Theory is one of the most interesting topics in sports performance, and I believe is central to performing at high levels. If you want to perform better this is well worth a listen!!

Another must read post by - I don't think this just applies to kids rather - athleticism starts with being human, and being human can actually be extremely athletic even outside of specialisation. From my experience most athletes would do very well if the spent more time working on the fundamentals and developing their all round movement ability as a foundation to the specialisation for any particular sport.

My benchmarks for pure, human function?

Full squat for mobility.
Single leg squat and single arm push up for strength.
Easy 10k for endurance (or, to my mind, sustainability - if you've done it well you'll have the energy to turn around and run back).

That's just off the top of my head but all those could be achieved and would enhance ANY specific performance without compromising it.

I don't mean either that you should just train for these test, but through a variety of activities from running, crawling, lifting and climbing, that they are a reasonable demonstration of "fitness". There variety is what interest me - it would be rare to find an endurance athlete who could demonstrate that sort of strength and similarly it's pretty hard to find a strength athlete who could run an easy 10k, but they would be more rounded if they could.

In the glossy heart of the 1980s, in the dimly lit halls of East Anchorage High School there walked a god. He was rangy, blond, and bore the cinematically perfect name of Trace Savage. And Trace Savage was awesome

This is one of my favourite books at the moment - very inspiring and it over turns the notion that happiness comes from success, instead proposing (correctly in my opinion) that being happy in what you do is the driving force needed for success. Awesome book!

The Happiness Advantage Shares seven core principles of positive psychology that each one of us can use to improve our performance, grow our careers, and gain a competitive edge at work. This title reveals how happiness actually fuels success and performance, not the other way around. Full descri...

If you ever doubted the addictive nature of sugar then read on. This article provides some interesting insight into the role of sugar in food cravings and also show that fat is not the primary problem. Arguable good fats (by which I predominantly mean saturated fats such as butter and coconut oil) are not problematic at all.

It's interesting to see in the article that the lowest sugar content was 7g per 100ml which is about the equivalent to 2 tsp of sugar in a cup of tea - not exactly skimping on it! To my mind this mean it is still unclear to what (if any) degree the fat has an effect. What is clear is the more sugar the stronger the drive to eat more and the greater the disruption of blood sugar that is clearly dangerous to health.

An intriguing new study suggests that what really draws people to rich desserts and prompts them to eat much more than perhaps they know they should is not the fat that they contain, but primarily the sugar.

Some of the things that are being discovered about how our bodies work are simply mind blowing! This article has some interesting points about how our posture affects us, most of which you'll probably not have realised!!!

I'll confess up front: I have terrible posture. It's been bad since I was in high school at least, and probably for even longer than that. It's one of those things I keep in the back of my mind as something I know I should do, but never get around to, like eating more vegetables and sending more pos...

This site has some really great movement articles, and this one is no exception. Fits very well with my view of movement and gives a clear description of the template I use in my practice. Well written and very informative.

Infants develop movement by progressively learning a series of fundamental movement patterns, which form the building blocks for more complex movements.

Want to learn something new? Check out this video. I firmly believe that if you practice with total focus and attention you really can pick new skills up very fast. I've only ever done this a few times and each time I have the results are amazing.

I also see it in people I work with who actually apply, in their own time, the exercises I teach. Just a few minutes of focused practice a day is the difference between just turning up and genuine, lasting improvement.

20 hours won't give you mastery but it will, if you focus and persist, give better results than you might imagine.

Author and business adviser Josh Kaufman reveals a new approach for acquiring new skills quickly with just a small amount of practice each day. To find out m...
