How regularly do you check in on the progress you are making on your Business Plan?

There’s no point creating one if you don’t do that. Is it visible? Do you block out dedicated REGULAR time to review it?

If you have a team, have they seen it?
Were they involved in helping create it?
Do you have a regular team meeting to assess how you are doing and what you need to stay/get back on track?

All these disciplines will enhance the chances of achieving the goals you set.

So if you’re not doing them at the moment, why not introduce them for the next quarter and see what happens?

If you need help with this, just send me a DM 💬

Sitting in a restaurant last week, a couple were sat on the next table, and they were both head down looking at their phones and only put them down when their food arrived.

A commentary on the way we live our lives now?

As a Business Owner, getting tangled in the weeds of your business and not looking up and around is a very poor habit to fall into.

Finding that time to regularly step away and reflect on what is and isn’t working, checking in with your team on that as well is essential. How consistent are you at doing that?

Postscript to the story. When the pudding arrived, it became apparent It was one of the diner’s birthday and they had spent the entire meal on their phones!

I mentioned this in a post at the start of the year – “92% of people fail to achieve their goals”.

One of the contributing factors is the lack of a plan to achieve those goals.

So if you find planning an awkward activity, why not get some help in doing that?

Continuing the AI theme of this month, why not use your AI agent of choice to do exactly that?
Writing the right prompt is key. If you want some help with that, come along to the 90 Day Planning session next Tues 16th and we’ll help you to create that plan.

A mantra in business is if you’re not doing (whatever your business product or service is), you should be selling; and if you’re not selling, you should be marketing.

Marketing is about getting conversations started, buy if you were able to improve your conversion rate, what impact would that have on your business?

Selling can be the most uncomfortable aspect of being a Business Owner – it doesn’t come easily to everyone.

If you’re not yet in a position to hire someone to do that on behalf of your business, what to do?

Do you record your sales calls and meetings? That can be very illuminating.

Another way to get better is to harness AI – using it to critique what you say; how you say it; how much talking you are doing rather than your prospect; how well are you at getting to the ‘pain point’.

Record those sales calls and put the transcript into AI, and then ask it to critique that against your sales process.

And if you haven’t got a process yet, perhaps get AI to help you with that first?

If your business is underperforming, it probably shows up in one of three ways - poor profit/cash flow; you’re working bonkers hours; or your team is unproductive.

Sir Gareth Southgate is credited with getting England to finally show up on the world stage in football tournaments, even if we’re yet to bring home the silverware.

He explained his approach at recently - simply he made strenuous efforts to understand what motivated EACH member of his squad. Rather than treat them all the same way, he recognised that players were different and that he would get more out of the squad collectively if he learnt what made each squad member tick.

If you’re like to learn more how to do that, read his book Lessons in Leadership or DM to find out how you could go about understanding your own team better.

A government survey estimates that 74% of small businesses are one-person enterprises. For many, that will be a deliberate choice (freelancers etc) but for many of them, they are stuck there because of their inability to find and keep the right talent.

Tim Campbell (of The Apprentice fame) touched on this at BizX 2026 when he talked about the importance of “really valuing the people who make your business tick”.

Firstly, taking time over recruitment is essential – many clients have rued hiring a mate rather than going through a rigorous process only for that to backfire. Secondly, investing time to make sure the team are happy and engaged – from saying thank you to an Employee of the Month award to an unexpected bonus are all ways of doing that.

As much as you love the trade or profession you specialise in, if you want your business to grow then you will need to step away from that and focus on becoming the best manager and leader you can be.

That could be the hardest thing you ever do as an Owner, but the results will be far greater than anything you can achieve yourself. If you’d like to talk about this further, then DM me 💬

What’s seen to be the biggest failure in business development?
The failure to follow up.

The first speaker at BizX, Jeb Blount, pointed out that it now takes 11 points of contact on average before a prospect engages.

Don’t know what your reaction is to that number but are you finding your sales process to be slower than it used to be?

So how good are you at keeping in contact with your prospects on a regular basis? Of course there is a point where persistence can become annoying, but if you were to look at how good you are at following up consistently, offering value ("I saw this and thought of you”), what would you see and what could you do about that?

What impact is the Iran confrontation having on your business? Supply chain disrupted? Higher costs? Customer hesitancy?

There are some parallels with the COVID lockdown – the unknown creating confusion and panic. What held true then holds true now – great communication becomes more important than ever.

Speaking MORE to customers, team members, partners and suppliers is vital – deepening relationships for greater loyalty and transparency. Spending more time with all your stakeholders could be the best investment you can make right now.
