Too many firm owners end up as the decision bottleneck that means the business can’t run without them.

Maybe you’re one of them.

Nothing moves without you.

Clients want to speak to you, not your team.

Work comes back to you for review, even if you’ve delegated it.

Your team check with you before every decision.

Everything starts and stops with you.

Join this week's Accountants Helping Accountants webinar to find out why so many firms get into that situation – and how to get out of it.

Shane will show you the 7 recurring patterns that are common to all accountancy firms with this issue; and how to interrupt those patterns and stop everything funnelling back to you.

If you're fed up working too hard but getting nowhere, join us to find out how to start reclaiming 5+ hours a week, without lowering your standards or losing fees.

He charged £2,000 apologetically.

"I know it seems a lot, but... I've tried to keep it as reasonable as I can... It's £2,000, obviously you don't have to... I mean, we can look at breaking it down if that helps..."

It wasn't the fee that was the problem. It was what the fee revealed. He didn't believe he was worth it — so he gave the client permission not to believe it either.

Six months on the AVN Roadmap. Different conversations. Different questions. Different evidence of what clients would pay, and why.

Same type of client. Same type of conversation. Six months later:

"Based on what you've told me, I'd be looking at around £2,000 for this. That's the right investment for the kind of difference we're talking about. When would you like to start?"

Same fee. Same service. Same accountant.

But the client heard something different. Not the number — the certainty behind it. Certainty is what clients hire. Not the figure. The conviction that you know exactly what you're doing.

He didn't rehearse a script. He changed what he believed about what he was offering. The words changed because the belief changed.

The before and after aren't just about the fee. They're about what question he was asking.

Before: "Will they pay it?"
After: "What does this work make possible for them?"

Great questions change everything.

Why real conversations matter.

AI can do a lot - it can give you a shedload of information on any topic under the sun.

But it doesn't actually care about you.

Here's why talking human-to-human is so beneficial:

You don't need to know their industry. You need to know these 3 question types.

The Profit Improvement question framework:

1. The Diagnostic — "What's the number in your business you most want to change right now?"
What it does: the client names what actually matters to them. Not the benchmarks. What they care about.

2. The Impact Question — "What would a 1% improvement in that number mean to you — in money, this year?"
What it does: the client does the maths themselves. They understand the value of the problem — and the accountant who helps them manage it.

3. The Direction Question — "If you could change one thing about how your business makes money in the next 12 months — what would it be?"
What it does: surfaces the real constraint, not the surface symptom. The client feels heard in a way most advisers never achieve.

These questions don't require industry expertise. They require genuine curiosity. Most accountants already have that. They just haven't had a framework for it.

The full question framework is at avn.co.uk/free-resources-for-accountants/

When unused pension funds and pension death benefits come under the scope of Inheritance Tax next year, it will mean big changes for clients.

Join the webinar to find out:

* Which clients are most exposed to the April 2027 changes

* The wider tax and estate-planning opportunities that should be reviewed

* Whether a client’s pension could create significantly more IHT than simply 40% of the pension value

You'll have a clear idea of where the risks lie, how to identify your affected clients and which areas to consider in light of the changes.

I can't impress this enough upon you: do it in the right order.

Because you can do the right things in the wrong order and still end up with more pressure, more confusion, and more work landing back on your desk.

That's why the AVN Roadmap has 7 stages, in a deliberate order. I won't bore you with the stage names — here's what each one actually delivers:

1. The pressure comes off — quick wins that create breathing space and make better feel possible
2. You get clear on what you actually want — in and out of the firm. The goal isn't always "bigger"
3. You see the route ahead — a step-by-step plan from exactly where you are now, in the right order
4. The firm starts leaning on you less — pricing, client attraction, team, systems, processes
5. Capacity and headspace open up — the room to breathe that makes the real shift possible
6. You deliver profit improvement — a structured process using the natural skills accountants already have, that the right clients genuinely value and pay for
7. And you don't travel it alone — because knowing what to do was never the hardest part

Watch what happens when you build it in this order.

The effort starts to come down. The firm asks less of you. Profit, happiness and purpose start to climb.

That's the opposite of where many firms are heading right now.

"Just an accountant."

That's how the owner introduced him at the networking event.

Six months earlier, that same accountant had pulled up a gross margin trend the owner had never noticed. Asked one question. Put an expansion on hold. And saved the business from a £300,000 mistake — by asking what nobody else had thought to ask.

"Just an accountant."

The most valuable person in that room wasn't the bank manager, the solicitor, or the consultant. It was the person who asked the right question at the right time.

Great questions change everything.
