I appear to have accidentally become a local social media influencer. šŸ˜‚

For a while now, I’ve been doing videos for some of my clients where I literally walk people to their business…sometimes ā€œwe’re HEREā€ isn’t actually that helpful when you’re tucked down a side street, above somewhere, around a corner or in a part of town people don’t automatically think to look.

And, guess what…they’ve worked really well! 🤩

And now I keep scrolling through my feed and seeing other local people doing them too; walking through town, camera pointing ahead and a showing people exactly how to find somewhere. šŸ—ŗļø

And I’m not saying I started a trend…but I’m also not not saying it. šŸ˜‚

In all seriousness, I love seeing more local businesses thinking about this. Social media isn’t just about posting pretty pictures and hoping somebody sees them. It’s about making it ridiculously easy for people to find you, understand what you do and actually come through the door.

Although accidentally becoming a Horsham influencer was definitely not on my bingo card for this year - now, where are those freebies…?! šŸ˜‚

Who's joining me in September at a rather fabulous event? šŸŽŸļø

Nikki Butlin is bringing Driven To Network back to Horsham in September and, while she steps into 'tour guide' mode to share her Driven Formula, I’ll be taking care of the hosting for her. šŸ¤

And we’ve got a couple of familiar Sussex faces joining us too, with Dee Blick and Lucy Pitts from Sussex Exclusive Magazine coming along for the morning. 🤩

I’ve known Nikki for a while and she has an infectious 'right, let’s actually DO something' energy, so I’m looking forward to hearing more about the formula she uses to turn goals into action rather than another thing sitting on the list. šŸ“‹

If September feels like a good time to get yourself moving on something you’ve been talking about for far too long, this could be a very well-timed morning. And if you’re coming, I’ll be the one in the red ByJove jacket! Get your ticket now šŸ‘‡

Put me in front of a video camera and I’m absolutely fine. Ask me to pose for a photo and suddenly I forget how to be a human. šŸ˜‚

Today I headed to Self-portrait Photo Studio | Shoreditch in London with Hannah from Hannah Spence šŸ’šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø | Social Media Manager & Consultant (thank you for organising an amazing day!) and a brilliant group of women, to push myself firmly out of my comfort zone.

I’m notoriously awkward in photos (there are usually closed eyes involved šŸ™ˆ), but today I actually relaxed, had fun and LOVED the experience. Photos incoming soon…

So Instagram has a new wordmark…obviously I had to see what ByJove Media would look like given the same treatment, and actually, I’m not entirely sure I hate it! šŸ¤”

Instagram has been gradually changing its look and feel over the years, but this is quite a noticeable change to something we’ve all become very used to seeing. So, putting my social media geek hat firmly on for a moment, I want to know what you think. šŸ’”

Do you like the new Instagram wordmark? Do you prefer the old one? Or, like most normal people, would you never have noticed if somebody hadn’t pointed it out? šŸ˜‚

I know a lot of people hate the idea of talking to camera, and honestly, I do understand it…stay with me here…

I used to stutter, I had very little confidence, and if you’d told me years ago that one day I’d be willingly filming myself talking into my phone for social media, I would probably have laughed at you and then hidden behind a large plant. 🪓

So when people say, ā€œI can’t do video,ā€ I never dismiss that, because it can feel like a really big thing, especially when you’re already battling that imposter syndrome voice telling you everyone else is more confident, more polished, more interesting or more ā€œexpertā€ than you.

But confidence doesn’t usually arrive fully formed, you can and need to build it. That might mean starting with a voiceover, using more photos of yourself, filming tiny clips you don’t even post, or just getting used to seeing and hearing yourself without immediately deciding it’s awful.

You don’t have to go from hiding behind graphics to full BBC presenter mode overnight, but showing a bit more of the human behind the business does make a difference, and the more you practise it, the less terrifying it becomes.

Annoyingly, the answer really is just to start. Tiny steps count (and I’m off to hide behind a plant now šŸ˜‚).

Well, this is a lovely bit of news to share. šŸ„‚

ByJove Media has been named a winner in the 2026 SME UK Enterprise Awards, in the category: Best Strategic Social Media Training & Consultancy 2026

It feels rather special, particularly coming in the same year ByJove Media turns 18. Eighteen years of social media strategy, training, consultancy, client work, platform changes, algorithm nonsense, content planning, learning, adapting, testing, explaining, re-explaining, and occasionally having a tiny snark about why 'just post more' is not a strategy. Watch out for my book coming soon telling you what is a strategy and has been for the last eighteen years...

At the heart of it all, my work has always been about helping businesses use social media properly, with clarity, confidence, purpose and a plan that makes sense for them. So this award really does mean a lot.

A huge thank you to my clients, cheerleaders, collaborators and everyone who continues to trust me with their social media and training. šŸ¤

People sometimes ask what finally gets me to do an Instagram ā€œyapā€ to camera. Usually, it’s when something makes me snarky. šŸ˜‚

Today’s topic: AI-generated posters.

Not all AI visuals are bad. I use AI, I teach AI, and think it can be brilliant when it’s used properly (to do those repetitive, boring things we don’t enjoy, giving us more time to do all the creative things we do enjoy!).

But the endless stream of near-identical AI posters doing the rounds at the moment? The same glossy style, the same slightly uncanny people, the same ā€œthis will doā€ energy? That’s not strong visual branding, and often even your logo is wrong on the graphic. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

If every business is using the same tool, the same prompts and the same style of image, it stops standing out very quickly. Your visuals should feel like your business. Your people, your place, your personality, your tone, your actual brand.

Sometimes that means using real photos, sometimes it means filming a quick video. Sometimes it means working with a local designer who can create something genuinely original for you.

AI can absolutely support creativity, but it needs the right information, the right prompts and using for the right tasks. šŸ¤–

I’ve just spent the day at the Digital Women ā„¢ Community AI Hackathon, a room full of brilliant women, big ideas, slide decks, prototypes and ā€œhang on, this could actually workā€ moments. šŸ’”

The challenge was to create an AI-powered product for business owners and entrepreneurs in just a few hours. No pressure then. 🤣

I was lucky enough to be part of a fantastic team with Vanya Gupta, Beth Parfitt, Amy and Juanita Enakimio, and we came runners-up with our product idea, Not Just Me. šŸŽ‰

The whole day showed what happens when you bring together different skills, different perspectives and a willingness to properly experiment. AI is powerful, of course, but the best ideas come from humans asking better questions, spotting real problems and working out what people actually need. 🤩

And, after we came runners-up, we had another quick review of Not Just Me and realised there may be even more potential in it than we first thought, so…watch this spaceā€¦šŸ‘€

A big thank you to Lucy Hall, the judges, mentors and everyone involved in creating such a practical, encouraging and inclusive event.

And huge congratulations again to my lovely team. I really enjoyed building with you. šŸ™Œ

Not Summer festival passes, honest. 🤣

These are my lanyards from three of the big events I’ve been to this year, and while they do make me look like I’m on a very niche world tour, they also represent something I think matters hugely in this industry; continuous learning. šŸ’”

I’ve worked in social media for 18 years this year, but I never want to be the person who assumes I already know it all. This industry moves too quickly for that, and the minute you stop learning is probably the minute you start giving outdated advice.

These events have given me fresh ideas, useful conversations, brilliant speakers, validation of my knowledge, and the chance to connect with other people who understand the weird, wonderful, ever-changing world of social media.

Staying good at this social media lark isn’t just about watching platform updates, you need to stay curious, test your thinking, listen to others, and make sure the advice you give your clients is grounded in real knowledge, not recycled trends - watch this space for my book all about this, coming soon...šŸ‘€

Social Media 101 - this should be standard practice for every reel uploaded to Instagram that has talking in itā€¦šŸ“£

So many reels are popping up without captions and that’s a little heartbreaking to see. From an accessibility perspective, it makes it much harder for some people to understand what you’re talking about. In my social media training sessions I always state captions should be standard when uploading reels - they are so easy to add and edit. Plus, lots and lots (and lots!) of people watch with the sound off - they are just going to scroll on past if you don’t caption…

So let’s make captions STANDARD on EVERY reel šŸ™Œ
