A Selection of Repairs We Came Across This Week
Several appliance faults this week all came down to the same issue overheated electrical connections.
The first was an integrated Kenwood dishwasher that had completely lost power. We found a burnt plug and socket connection hidden behind the appliance. This often happens when the dishwasher is heating water and drawing a high electrical load. As the customer already had an isolation switch above the worktop, we replaced the damaged connection with a fused hard wired outlet.
Next was a Cooke & Lewis built in oven that had stopped working. The fault was traced to a burnt selector switch, preventing power reaching the heating circuits.
The third repair involved a Lamona oven and hob installation that had also lost power. In this case, the main terminal block had overheated and burnt out, another fault commonly linked to loose electrical connections.
One thing we always advise is to trust your nose. If you notice a burning plastic smell, a hot electrical odour, or an appliance that intermittently loses power, it’s worth having it checked.
A lesser known warning sign is a strong fishy smell when nobody is cooking fish. This can sometimes be caused by overheating electrical components or wiring insulation.
The good news is that all three faults were repairable and safely returned to service.
If you’re experiencing problems with an appliance and need a repair in Bristol, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We were recently in Henleaze, Bristol repairing this Bosch washing machine after the drum had stopped rotating.

On inspection, we found the fault was caused by worn carbon brushes.

Carbon brushes are a normal wear and tear item and naturally wear down over time. A simple way to think of them is similar to car tyres they’re not necessarily a fault or breakdown, just a component with a limited lifespan that eventually needs replacing.

Washer dryers often wear carbon brushes more quickly than standard washing machines due to the longer running times and additional drying cycles.

While carrying out the repair, the customer also mentioned they had purchased a new door seal but weren’t feel confident fitting it themselves. We fitted the replacement seal while we were there, giving the machine both a mechanical and cosmetic refresh.

With fresh carbon brushes fitted and a new door seal installed, this Bosch has been given a new lease of life and should continue running for quite a few more years yet.

We attended a property in Brentry, Bristol where both a Lamona integrated washer dryer and dishwasher had failed within a short space of time.

On our initial visit, we carried out a full inspection and diagnosed faults with both PCBs.

On our return visit, we carried out the repairs.
The washing machine PCB had failed, but rather than replacing the board, we traced the fault to a failed component, removed it, and replaced it like for like, bringing the machine back to life.

Unfortunately, the dishwasher PCB wasn’t salvageable, so a replacement control board was sourced and fitted.

Both appliances were repaired and fully tested within a couple of hours, saving the customer around £800 compared to replacement.

We are Bristol Appliance Repairs, carrying out component level repairs where others simply replace. If you’re recommending us, please make sure people reach the genuine Bristol Appliance Repairs.

Recently, we were called out to an LG washing machine in Henleaze that was no longer draining.

The customer had already checked the filter for blockages but couldn’t find anything, so that’s when they got in touch.

On inspection, we found the drain pump had failed.

A new pump assembly was supplied and fitted, and the machine is now back up and running.

If you’re having issues with appliance repairs in Bristol, feel free to get in touch, we are always happy to help.

HorseWorld Staunton Lane, Whitchurch 🐴

Called out to HorseWorld, a long established Bristol charity that’s been caring for horses since the 1950s.

They’ve spent decades rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses, ponies and donkeys. A proper local organisation doing real work behind the scenes.

On inspection, we found the Hoover washing machine wasn’t draining.

Blocked pump filter completely packed with animal hair.

Cleared the blockage, checked the pump and ran full test to make sure everything was draining and running correctly again.

Not every day you pull horse hair out of a washing machine, but it makes sense in a place like this.

If your washing machine, dishwasher or dryer isn’t draining or performing properly, get in touch, we’re always happy to help.

Fridge freezer repair

We were recently called out to a Hotpoint fridge freezer in Horfield as the fridge section wasn’t cooling properly.

On inspection, the evaporator at the back of the appliance was completely solid with ice. This is usually a sign that the appliance isn’t carrying out its defrost cycle properly.

After testing the components, we found the defrost heater had failed.

The heater sits around the evaporator and is responsible for melting any ice that builds up during normal operation. When it fails, the ice continues to build until the airflow is blocked and the fridge section starts to warm up.

The part had to be ordered, so in the meantime the customer manually defrosted the appliance ready for our return visit.

This type of repair has to be done carefully, as the evaporator carries the refrigerant gas. Any accidental damage can cause a leak, which would make the appliance beyond repair.

A new heater was fitted, the appliance reassembled, and everything was back up and running again.

Another fridge freezer saved.

If you’re having problems with your fridge freezer or any household appliance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re always happy to help.

We were called out this week to an integrated washing machine after the customer reported that the start button had stopped responding and didn’t seem to be making contact.

As we always aim to get our customers back up and running as quickly as possible, the issue was discussed over the phone first. From the customer’s description, we already had a good idea of what the problem was likely to be.

On many washing machines, manufacturers sell this part as a separate light guide, which sits behind the fascia panel and allows the button to make contact with the control board. However, on this Beko appliance, the light guide comes as part of the complete fascia panel assembly.

Fortunately, Beko parts are very reasonably priced, and in this case the cost of a full fascia panel was actually cheaper than what some other manufacturers charge for just the small light guide component.

We ordered the part in advance so that when we arrived, the repair could be completed in a single visit, minimising disruption for the customer and avoiding the need to wait for further engineer visits.

The new fascia panel was fitted and the machine is now working perfectly again.

This is exactly what we aim for quick diagnosis, the right parts ready, and customers back up and running with minimal disruption.
