One thing 25 years in People & Culture taught me:

Most resignations don’t come out of nowhere.

People often leave long before they hand in their notice.

They leave when they stop feeling heard.
They leave when effort becomes invisible.
They leave when carrying the team becomes normal.

Good management isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about making people feel they matter while they’re still there.

Comment STAY if you’ve ever worked for a manager who made you want to stay.

Most hiring mistakes don’t start in the interview.

They start long before anyone applies.

After 25+ years in HR, I’ve put together the five patterns I see small business owners repeat most often - and how to avoid them.

⚓ Practical.
🤍 Human.
📝 No jargon.

Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the link to the free copy in my bio.

Respectfully...

employees cannot read your mind.

Clear expectations.

Clear communication.

Clear standards.

Those three things solve far more workplace problems than most disciplinary meetings ever will.

After 25+ years in People & Culture, I’ve found that many performance conversations could have been avoided by one simple question:

“Did we actually tell them?”

🤍

Comment CLARITY if you’ve ever heard:

“Well... they should know.”

😂

Respectfully...

employees cannot follow expectations they’ve never been told about.

A surprising number of workplace problems start with:

“Well... they should know.”

Clear expectations prevent a lot of difficult conversations later.

Comment EXPECTATIONS if you’ve ever heard that phrase.

One of the biggest hiring myths?

“We’ll know if they’re right once we get the reference.”

Honestly…you probably won’t.

Most UK references now simply confirm:
✅ Job title
✅ Dates of employment
✅ Sometimes sickness or disciplinary information (if company policy allows).

Very few employers will openly tell you someone was difficult, underperformed or damaged the team.

That’s why hiring decisions should be built on:
⚓ A clear role.
⚓ Good interview questions.
⚓ Practical examples.
⚓ A well-managed probation period.

References should simply confirm what you already believe.

Not rescue a rushed decision.

🤍

Comment REFERENCE if you’ve ever received one that told you absolutely nothing.

For the business owner.

The manager.

The person replaying tomorrow’s conversations in their head.

🤍

You do not need to:

✔ rehearse every outcome

✔ predict every problem

✔ mentally attend tomorrow before it arrives

😂

Bobby has reviewed the situation.

🐾

His recommendation is sleep.

Store today.

Rest tonight.

Respectfully…

employees don’t judge an open-door policy.

They judge what happens when they use it.

Respectfully…

probation shouldn’t contain surprises.

😂

The best managers give feedback early, not just at the end.
