The River Soar is Leicester’s historic heartbeat. Originally named *Leire*, it gave the city its name and was the legendary resting place of King Richard III and King Leir. During the Industrial Revolution, it merged with the Grand Union Canal, driving Leicester's textile boom—famously turning the water pink with factory dyes.
Today, the river has seen a massive environmental rebirth. Flowing through key spots like Abbey Park, its thriving waters are now home to returning otters, while its scenic towpaths and channels are popular hubs for kayakers, narrowboats, walkers, and cyclists.
