Quartz Winery Primis Pure Red 2019
is an urban winery located in at the heart of the capital. They make their wine in East London and Primis Pure Red 2019 is their first vintage.
The Montepulciano grapes used are grown mainly in central Italy and come from 60 years old vines. Once selected and harvested at the perfect time (Montepulciano can ripen late and be too green if harvested too early) the grapes are then refrigerated and transported to London.
vision is to make low intervention wines that are as natural as possible. Fermentation occurs with the grape’s natural wild yeast and sulphites are not used at any stage of the wine making or during bottling. After fermentation the grape skins are kept in contact with the wine for one month (this technical term is called the maceration). The grapes are pressed slightly and the malolactic fermentation (or 2nd fermentation) happen naturally. The wine is aged part in oak barrel and in stainless steel for 6 months. The wine is then matured for a further 2 months in the bottle. And right now, it is ready to drink.
It is a lifelong dream for the team behind . Not only that what an achievement and testament to their determination to make such a good quality wine in London. Congratulations to wine maker for the first vintage!
Colour – bluish purple red
Nose – fruity and floral, notes of cherry and red plums, violet and a touch of vanilla
Palate – simple and straight forward, packed with jammy and chewy fruits, dry with a sharp intensity. Medium body.
Although this is a wine meant to be drunk young, I suggest it is decanted and allowed to breathe for 30 to 60 minutes. (I plan to do a club on decanting in the coming weeks) Serve between 16 and 18 Celsius.
I cooked a roasted chicken and French fries to go with the Primis and it was stunning.
