Major Data Protection Changes

The new EU regulation on data protection is coming into force in May 2018 and everyone will need to adhere to them. The UK will still be part of the EU at this time and will have to comply with this regulation. The exact implications of this for research are being determined by the MRS in consultation with the ICO. The Fair Data website has guidance on what you can do now to prepare for the EU GDPR www.fairdata.org.uk

The changes mean greater accountability on all businesses handling data (whether as a controller or a processor) – a wider scope, stronger individual rights, higher fines and sanctions, extensive new compliance and audit demands from clients.

Compliance Timeline
Phase 1: Raise awareness and gather information (Aug – Dec 2016)
Phase 2: Plan & Prioritise (Jan – May 2017)
Phase 3: Implement changes (June – Dec 2017)
Phase 4: Embed change, train and re-train (Jan – May 2018)

List Recruitment – Deceptively Difficult
On the face of it, list recruitment should be an easier and much cheaper option as you have the contact details in front of you …. But in actual fact it can be a tricky beast to handle.
Lengthy experience of list recruitment has become easier for me since I have begun explaining the pitfalls and processes to clients, and now work in a way which provides the best outcome for both.

Evolution of Social Class
Our job during recruitment is to ensure we get the best possible respondents.
Social class can pose a problem in qualitative recruitment as very ambiguous. It is not as relevant as it was once before due to the change within households over the years. One of the first social grading editions states ‘in the unlikely event that the head of household is a woman’ just shows how things have evolved!
Social grading has become a slightly archaic process and now we need to depend on the recruiter’s intuitiveness, experience and intelligence to ascertain what social grouping the respondent should fit into.
Although the social grading HOH occupation is a good base for respondents, more information is needed on the respondent you want to target, as the SEG question doesn’t take into account the bigger picture of background, education & shopping habits.
In conclusion, I would always propose providing a short pen portrait of respondents alongside the brief/spec to provide a better direction when recruiting.

Car Recruitment

Should we be looking at different and more realistic criteria when recruiting for car research?

Most often it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack with all the permutations given by a client and does not necessarily reflect the current UK market.

Of course people do buy cars from new but it seems more people are buying cars that are classed as ‘used’ or ‘second hand’ just because they have a few miles on the clock as they can get a better price for it. See the BBC News article link below

Algorithms in qual research

Whenever I am asked to use an algorithm for qualitative recruitment I am filled with disappointment (bit dramatic I know!). Not all are bad but I feel most are suited to quantitative research where numbers are greater.

My issue with algorithms in qual is that they can be quite contradictory in terms of what they are asking, and this can lead to screening out a number of people that should fit the criteria perfectly but don’t as the algorithm is too rigid a tool, and does not take into consideration the respondents overall opinions and thoughts.

My preferred choice would be a pen portrait, which fits into the world of qualitative much better. Pen portraits cover age and other demographics but can also focus on life-stage, attitudes and appearance dependent on the respondent profile needed. They can also give the researcher a good overview of who they will be speaking to.

Pen portraits used alongside specific statements they should correctly answer in the screener (defined by brief) does more to ensure the right participant for qual research than I feel algorithms do.
