This is coaching. This is progress. And this is why I love my job.

One of the things I love most about coaching small businesses is seeing what happens when someone takes what we've worked on together and actually puts it into practice.

There's something important to understand about coaching. I can ask the questions, challenge your thinking, give you tools, share knowledge and help you see things from a different perspective. I can mentor you through the areas you haven't tackled before, but I can't do the work for you.

And that's how it should be.

The enthusiasm and energy in a coaching session can be brilliant. Then you go back to running your business, dealing with customers, managing the day-to-day and doing all the things that need your attention. Sometimes the things we've discussed slip down the priority list. Sometimes there's a little procrastination and sometimes I won't hear anything until our next session.

I'll be honest, there are moments when I wonder whether I've explained something well enough, whether the penny has dropped or whether the work we've done together is making the difference we'd hoped.

Which is why messages like this make me ridiculously happy!

A few months ago, we spent time working on cash flow forecasting, budgeting and, perhaps just as importantly, the mindset around managing money in the business. We talked about getting organised, understanding the numbers and having greater visibility and control.

My client took it away and did the wor and now, here we are. Transactions categorised, six months of bookkeeping brought up to date and plans for an office with a corkboard and whiteboard to keep everything organised.

I particularly love the phrase 'an adult thing I did'! 😂

My job isn't to run your business for you. It's to help you feel more confident in running it yourself, to give you the clarity and practical support to make better decisions and to help you move forward.

And when a client gets in touch months later, not because they need something, but because they want to share what they've achieved, well, that's a pretty special feeling.

If you're a small business owner wondering whether all that time spent posting is worth it, this one's for you. 👇

I have to admit, it's something I've struggled with. Thinking of content, keeping up with a posting schedule and wondering whether anyone is actually interested in what you're saying.

Earlier this year, as I was changing direction with BCJ Coaching, I started to feel a bit nervous about growing the business and attracting new customers.

Then along came a three-month contract back in the corporate world. I've been getting stuck into HR, data analysis and project work, and as we move towards implementation, I'll be putting my coaching skills to good use to help embed the changes.

It's reminded me how much I enjoy what I do and made me even more determined to get my 2027 business plan sorted, helping more small businesses grow and take on their first employees.

But the real boost came today. I was chatting to someone I haven't crossed paths with in over a year, and they told me they follow my content closely.

Honestly, I was surprised! I didn't think my posts were particularly brilliant, and I certainly hadn't expected this person to be following along.

It was a lovely reminder that people are watching, even when you don't hear a peep from them.

Your next customer could be quietly following along, getting to know you and what you do, and waiting for the right moment to get in touch.

It's a reminder of what I tell my own customers: keep going. It won't happen overnight, and there will be days when you wonder why you're bothering. But you never know who's watching or when that next opportunity might come along.

It's been a while since I did an update.

I've been busy re-developing my business. Same offering but specifically for small businesses. I'm so excited to be in this space helping people bring their business idea to life, supporting their growth with practical business coaching, HR and Payroll Support.

This business direction feels much more aligned and more 'me' and I'm loving working with my customers on getting their business admin, HR, payroll and cash flow under control and giving them time back to concentrate on what they do best.

I'm also out there doing HR consulting on special projects which is keeping me on my toes.

Arthur meanwhile has been missing his morning walks so today is about bringing balance back and getting our vitamin D in to kick start the day in our happy place. 🙌

Now for that long customer call.......

It's been over a year in the making and it's interesting how my business has evolved and where I'm moving my business forward to help other small businesses.

I did it! I managed to set up and run my business for a whole year. I'm so proud of myself.

I can't believe how quickly it's gone by but I've really enjoyed the process even the hard days and I've learnt so much about myself along the way..

The business doesn't look at all how I thought it would a year ago but it's grown in a way that's organic and I'm happy with the direction its going.

That miscommunication over boundaries and expectations at work might have started with you!

If you're not setting the boundaries and expectations together, upfront, then you might be training your co-workers to have different expectations to yours.

Make sure you clarify the what, when & how of a project before you start so you're all on the same page and avoid that tricky conversation.
