Finding much more to see than expected, I explored Carisbrooke Castle, just outside Newport on the Isle of Wight.

Best known as a (very comfortable) prison for Charles I after the English Civil War and before his ex*****on (where he tried to escape twice), the history of the castle goes back over 1,000 years.

Originally a Saxon fortified settlement, the Normans transformed it into a Castle proper, with the striking motte and bailey layout still intact. It was subsequently extended and improved many times over the centuries, ultimately becoming the summer home if Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria, after her mother's death at Osborne.

Now looked after by English Heritage, this is well worth a visit when you're on the island. There's ample space for children to run around and they'll enjoy the donkeys, who show how the treadmill worked to bring water up the 50' well.

On previous visits, we had spent several days in Florence, soaking up that unique atmosphere and history the city has. This time, we had to cram it into one day. In some respects, that, and the fact that we hadn't visited for several years, meant we saw Florence differently.

Best wishes to you all. Have a very Happy Christmas filled with warmth, joy and laughter. 🎄🎅🎁

Getting to Florence for a third visit was a highlight of our week away. Even the weather couldn't dampen our joy. We first came here on our honeymoon 25 years ago and it has been our favourite city to visit ever since.
