7 August.

7 November.

7 February.

7 May.

If you're in Making Tax Digital, or joining in April 2027, these four dates are about to run your year.

My new post covers what goes in each quarterly update, how the late submission points work, and a couple of simple formulas to make Excel count down to your next deadline for you.

Diary the 1st, not the 7th!

Small feature, genuinely bigger impact than it sounds.

Microsoft finally gave us proper checkboxes in Excel. If you've ever built a tracker, checklist, approval sheet or dashboard, you'll know why that matters.

The old version was clunky and had to be added through Developer tools. The new version is built straight into Excel, can be formatted, and can be linked into formulas to make your spreadsheets respond when you tick a box.

That's when a simple checkbox starts getting really useful.

Part two of my Dynamic Arrays series, and this is where it gets genuinely powerful.

Building on UNIQUE, SORT, FILTER and SEQUENCE from part one, this one covers HSTACK, VSTACK, TAKE, DROP, CHOOSECOLS and CHOOSEROWS.

These are functions that let you reshape, extract and stack your data in ways that would traditionally have taken a lot more work, all inside Excel, and all with single formulas.

A little trickier than part one, but just as ACE once it clicks.

Macros sound technical.
But recording your first one is easier than most people expect.

If you repeat a task in Excel more than once a week, it's usually worth automating:

* Cleaning up the same messy weekly report
* Removing blank rows
* Saving a sheet straight to PDF

My new post covers recording a macro, when written VBA is the better option, assigning a macro to a button, and the security basics you shouldn't skip.

Start small and build from there.

"You can't use a spreadsheet for Making Tax Digital."

You can.

You just need the right link between your spreadsheet and HMRC.

That link is called bridging software, and it's much simpler than it sounds. It doesn't do your bookkeeping, it just sends your figures to HMRC.

My new post explains what it is, why HMRC needs it, and 4 things to check before you choose one.

Filters are one of the first things people learn in Excel, but there's a lot more to them than simply switching them on.

Used properly, they let you quickly narrow a huge dataset down to exactly what you need to see: a single client, a particular month, one product, without changing or deleting a single thing underneath.

I've written up how to turn them on, how to filter more than one column at once, and a couple of things worth knowing before you rely on them for anything important.

Simple Excel feature. Really useful when you know how to use it properly.

IF has to be one of the most powerful formulas in Excel.
And also one of the most misunderstood.

Flagging overdue invoices, grading scores, applying a bonus only where it's due, it all comes down to the same three parts.

In my new post I've started with the basics and built up to nested IFs and combining IF with AND and OR, plus the common mistakes that trip people up (missing brackets, I'm looking at you!).

Start simple and layer up as you go.

Not every useful thing in Excel is a big feature.

Some of the best time savers are tiny, the kind of shortcuts that rarely get much attention, but when you think about the hundreds of clicks you make in Excel every day, they soon add up.

This is a round-up of the quick tips I come back to with clients again and again, originally written for Executive Support Magazine.

Nothing complicated. Just small Excel tricks that make everyday tasks that little bit quicker.

Small post. Genuinely useful.

"I've only got the one flat, MTD doesn't apply to me."

Maybe. Maybe not.

It's based on your rent BEFORE expenses, plus any self employed income you have. And from April 2028 the threshold drops to £20,000, which is around £1,670 a month in rent.

In my new post I've worked through 3 examples, a single flat, a single house, and a landlord with a small side business, to show exactly where each one lands.

I'll admit it, I'm a bit obsessed with Named Ranges 😁

A formula that reads VAT_Rate*Total tells you everything at a glance.
A formula that reads F1*Total tells you nothing until you go and check what's in F1.

Named Ranges save time, cut the risk of errors and make every formula easier to trust.

My new post covers how to create them, find them and edit them, plus where they really shine: lookups, drop down lists and Pivot Tables.

If you've never used them, this is your sign to start.
