Meet our Tree Team! 🌳

Introducing Kieran, Nathan and Simon, three of the people responsible for looking after the trees growing here at Palmstead.

From pruning and shaping to monitoring growth and carrying out seasonal maintenance, there’s plenty of work involved in producing healthy, well-structured trees ready for our customers.

And with the busy tree-lifting season just around the corner, the team are now preparing for the months ahead as we move into rootball and open ground season.

It’s an important time of year on the nursery, with plenty of work going on behind the scenes to make sure our field-grown stock is ready for lifting and supplying to our customers throughout the autumn/winter months.

Behind the Bark: Meet Martyn🌿

Martyn is our Herbaceous Supervisor and, after around 25 years at Palmstead, it’s fair to say he knows his way around the nursery!

Martyn is responsible for the growing and care of our herbaceous crops, keeping a close eye on stock levels and quality while managing his team and the seasonal jobs that keep everything looking its best.

From trimming, pruning and feeding to pest checks and moving crops under cover for winter, his role changes throughout the seasons, always with one eye on what’s coming next.

And his favourite plants on the nursery right now? While plenty of plants are starting to slow down for winter, the asters, salvias and echinacea are still putting on a great display.

Having worked across almost every area of Palmstead over the years, Martyn has plenty of nursery knowledge under his belt. But something you might not know about him? He’s an active collector of celebrity autographs!

What’s the best evergreen hedging for Kent?🌿

It’s a question we’re often asked by Kent-based designers, and the answer depends largely on your soil.

The north and east of Kent tend to have more free-draining, chalky soils, whereas across the Weald you’re more likely to be working with heavier clay.

For chalky, free-draining soils:

🌿 Ilex aquifolium – a tough native evergreen offering privacy as well as wildlife value.
🌿 Taxus baccata – a classic choice for a dense, formal hedge that’s exceptionally long-lived.

For clay soils:
🌿 Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ – a robust conifer that tolerates clay well and establishes a dense, uniform screen.
🌿 Prunus ‘Rotundifolia’ – a fast-growing option with large, glossy leaves. On particularly heavy clay, incorporating organic matter can help with initial drainage.

And for a range of Kent soils:

🌿 Prunus lusitanica – a neat, hardy evergreen with dark green foliage and distinctive red stems that performs well across a range of reasonable soils.

Choosing the right hedge starts with understanding the site. If you have a question about hedging for an upcoming scheme, leave it in the comments or speak to our Sales Team at [email protected].

Over budget on your planting scheme?🌿

It doesn’t necessarily mean compromising on the overall design.

Our Sales Team can help with value engineering, looking at different varieties, specifications or sizes to find suitable alternatives while keeping the overall look and purpose of your scheme in mind.

Sometimes a small change to the plant specification can make a real difference to the overall project cost.

As we move further into autumn, this month’s Palmstead Picks bring together late-season colour, structure and interest for planting schemes:

🌿 Anemone × hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ – elegant white flowers held on tall stems, providing valuable late-season interest.
🌿 Hylotelephium spectabile ‘Stardust’ – clusters of white flowers above fleshy foliage, providing structure and a useful source of late-season interest for pollinators.
