Sometimes the simplest posts are the ones that get people talking. 💬

We recently created this post for Sylhety Lounge with one simple purpose: to thank the people who choose to follow and support a local independent business.

And people responded.

Likes, comments and genuine interaction from customers, all from taking a moment to recognise the people on the other side of the screen.

We've been a little quiet on our own social media until lately

There's a pretty good reason for that.

We've been busy working on everybody else's. 📱

From restaurants and takeaways to pubs and other independent businesses, most of our time is spent behind the scenes creating content, planning campaigns, taking photographs, filming and editing videos, writing posts and managing social media for our clients.

And there's something you might not realise when looking through the Siren pages:

When we share content from the businesses we work with, that content has been created by us.

That's what we do.

Over the next few weeks, we're going to start sharing a little more of that work here too.

What does building a business on social media from scratch actually look like? 📱

We're currently doing exactly that with Mumbai Lounge on Fossgate, in York.

When we started working together, we created brand-new Facebook, Instagram and TikTok accounts. No established audience. No thousands of followers waiting for us.

So we're building it.

Organically.

But growing a social media presence isn't simply about chasing follower numbers.

First, we need to understand what makes the business worth following.

For Mumbai Lounge, that means capturing the quality of the food, the people behind it, the experience of dining there and the attention that goes into every dish.

We've been photographing food, filming inside the kitchen, talking to staff, interviewing customers, creating campaigns and gradually developing an online identity that reflects the restaurant itself.

2,100 Facebook followers. One restaurant. A very diverse audience. 🌍🍛

Village Spice has built an impressive following on Facebook over the years, with people following the restaurant from York and much further afield.

And that creates an interesting challenge for us as Social Media Managers.

Who are we actually talking to?

Village Spice serves a wonderfully diverse customer base.

York's large international and student communities mean restaurants like Village Spice can offer familiar flavours and dishes to people who may be thousands of miles from home.

But that's only one side of the audience.

Village Spice is just as capable of satisfying the local appetite for the traditional Anglo-Indian favourites that have become part of Britain's food culture.

Two audiences. Different reasons for visiting. One restaurant.

Our job isn't to choose between them.

It's to understand both.

That's why we don't believe social media management should simply mean posting photographs of food three times a week.

We learn who your customers are, why they choose your business and what makes them keep coming back.

Then we build the content around them.

What does a Social Media Manager actually do? 📱

If you run a small business, you probably already know you should be doing more with social media.

The problem is finding the time to do it.

And that's where we come in.

A Social Media Manager doesn't just put the occasional picture on Facebook.

We learn how your business works. We identify who you're trying to reach, which platforms they're using and what content is most likely to get their attention.

We plan campaigns. We take photographs. We film and edit video. We write content. We manage your pages. We look at what's working, what isn't, and adapt the strategy accordingly.

But there's another reason Siren exists.

We deliberately work with small, independent businesses.

Traditional marketing agencies can be fantastic, but their pricing and service models can put professional social media management beyond the reach of many smaller businesses.

We don't think it should be.
