Setting Your Own Agenda - Managing Your Career

How far are you going to go in Life and what does the future hold in store for you? Once upon a time, you probably looked to your employer to provide you with answers to questions like these or more likely, you simply kept your head down, did a good day’s work and trusted in your employer’s judgement to;

(a) Recognize your potential
(b) Come up with the right opportunities for you and
(c) Look after your training and development

The main difference between this and a self managed career is that, with the latter, the Responsibility for determining the Aims and Directions devolves directly onto you.
While this seems straightforward enough in principle, the biggest problem in practice can be getting used to the IDEA – Having Your Own Agenda.

Like a company, Your Reputation is your Most Valuable Asset as well.
Your Reputation, Your Brand, is defined as the way you are perceived by the people you work with, for and by your customers.
Your reputation is summarized in the words people use to describe you when you are not there. Everything you do to improve the quality of your reputation improves your perceived value and the value of what you do. And perhaps, the most important part of your reputation is your ability to get the results for which you were hired.

Many people suffer from job insecurity and stagnant or declining levels of income because they have not continued to increase their self value and the value of their contribution to their employer. Today, the most valuable component of every service or product is the amount of knowledge and skill that goes into it. If a person does not continually learn and grow, developing his skills ever higher, the value of his contribution will gradually decline over time. He will experience terminations, extended period of unemployment and continuous financial worry
You achieve job security and higher income by deciding yourself to improving and increasing the results you get for others and by increasing the contribution that you make to their lives and work.
According to the Law of Correspondence, Your standard of living on the outside will be the reflection of the value you have prepared yourself to contribute on the inside.

Managing your own career

There was a time not long ago when most of us were happy to leave the managing of our careers to our employers. This is not the case today. And entirely different view prevails derived from an awareness that the world has changed and employers – irrespective of how paternalistic they may appear – can only deliver to a point.

What brought about this new attitude? The Great Shake-Outs, Change in Corporate Strategies, Competition, Redundancy coupled with which a new bread of employer emerged on the scene – one who seemed to be saying ‘Don’t hold us responsible for your career. That’s your business not ours’.

It was out of this uncertainty created by all this turmoil that the idea of managing your own career evolved. After all, if you could no longer rely on your employer to do the job for you, who better qualified to take on the role than you?

Managing your own career is a challenging and rewarding experience. Done properly, it will take you to new highs and enable you to enjoy the freedom and flexibility that modern careers can offer. Neglected, it will set you on the path to stagnation and underachievement.

Starting a job search is like becoming a Sales Rep for a short period of time, but you’re not selling a product, you’re selling YOURSELF.
Know your product, industry, selling points, customers, and market place. Give potential employers a reason to hire you. Ask yourself, “Would I hire ME and why?” Once you are prepared, remember that it will take time, skill, enthusiasm, and most of all, a positive, “can-do” attitude.
