A trove of documents from the US State Department reveal how US and its Western allies, especially France, intentionally set perfect conditions for the coup to take place.
They believed that a serious economic crisis could speed up Nkrumah's removal by a popular uprising or a coup. For this reason, they intentionally ignored Nkrumah's request for aid as Ghana descended into economic turmoil.
As the planned discontent against Nkrumah grew, US officials secretly kept in touch with Ghanaian plotters who briefed them about their plan to overthrow to Nkrumah.
Robert William Komer, the US's Deputy National Security Adviser, sent a memorandum to President Lyndon B. Johnson's Special Assistant for National Security Affairs stating:
"For your information, we may have a pro-Western coup in Ghana soon.Certain key military and police figures have been planning one for some time, and Ghana’s deteriorating economic condition may provide the spark.
"The plotters are keeping us briefed, and we are more on the inside than the British. We and other Western countries (including France) have been helping to set up the situation by ignoring Nkrumah’s pleas for economic aid. All in all, it looks good."
