Sovereign risk in African markets is not unpredictable. It is unread. The signals precede the crisis by six to eighteen months in almost every documented case.

The pattern is consistent across markets and cycles. Ghana's debt restructuring in 2023 was preceded by eighteen months of widening Eurobond spreads, sustained reserve drawdowns and successive IMF programme reviews that flagged fiscal slippage clearly and publicly. Nigeria's naira devaluation in 2023 followed years of parallel market divergence, declining gross reserves and a current account structure that made the managed rate increasingly untenable. Zambia's default in 2020 was telegraphed by debt service ratios that had been flagged in successive IMF Article IV consultations for three consecutive years.

In each case the information was available. What was absent was a structured framework for reading it early enough to act.

Spica Advisory uses a five-signal sovereign risk framework across its 11 African markets. The signals: foreign reserve coverage falling below three months of imports, sovereign bond spreads widening above 800 basis points, IMF programme delays or non-completion of reviews, election-cycle regulatory freezes on foreign investment and strategic sector entry, and executive or legislative changes to ownership rules in energy, mining, telecoms or financial services.

None of these signals in isolation constitutes a crisis. In combination, and tracked across a 6 to 18 month horizon, they provide the lead time required to reposition, renegotiate or restructure exposure before the headline arrives.

The market does not reward reaction. It rewards anticipation.

Spica Advisory provides sovereign risk monitoring, market entry advisory and investment positioning support across 11 African markets currently.

‎Today two significant occasions fall on the same date, and we believe that convergence deserves to be acknowledged.

‎Africa Day marks 63 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa - the moment Africa formally declared that her future belongs to her people. It is a day of pride, reflection, and recommitment to the work of building this continent from within.

‎Eid al-Adha marks the culmination of the Hajj season; a festival rooted in sacrifice, obedience, and the profound act of placing something higher than personal interest at the centre of one's life. Across Africa, over 700 million Muslims observe this occasion today in communities from Dakar to Dar es Salaam, Kano to Casablanca.

‎What strikes us about both occasions is how deeply they share a common thread - the willingness to build, sacrifice, and commit to something that outlasts the individual moment.

‎That is the spirit behind every institution, every business, every legacy worth building on this continent.

‎At Spica Advisory, we serve clients across 11 African markets - Muslim and Christian, anglophone and francophone, East and West. Today we celebrate all of them.

‎Happy Africa Day. Eid Mubarak. 🌍🤲

The African Continental Free Trade Area is the largest free trade agreement on the planet by number of countries. 54 nations. A combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. One framework.

And yet intra-African trade sits at just 15%.

The global average is 52%.

That gap is not a failure. It is the opportunity. The corridors are being built - road, rail, port, digital. New infrastructure investments unlocked $28 billion in corridor trade in 2024 alone.

The question is no longer whether Africa will trade with herself. The question is which businesses, which investors, and which advisors are already positioned when the volume arrives.

First movers do not just win market share. They write the rules.

At Spica Advisory, we help serious players navigate the corridors before the crowd arrives.

The signal is clear. Are you reading it?

Today, 63 years ago, 32 African leaders gathered in Addis Ababa and made a declaration that changed history. Not a request. Not a petition. A declaration.
Africa would govern herself.

That energy has never left. It lives in every founder building without enough capital. Every trader crossing borders before the roads catch up. Every young African rewriting what is possible from Lagos to Nairobi, Accra to Abidjan.

Today we celebrate a continent that has never stopped moving forward, even when the world wasn't watching.

54 nations. 1.4 billion people. One unstoppable story.

Africa is not arriving. She has always been here.

Happy Africa Day from all of us at Spica Advisory. We are honoured to do this work — on this continent, for this continent.

Africa’s best builders all share one thing. This Saturday, here is what it is. 👇

The pattern that consistently separates the ventures that endure from the ones that stall is not the size of the raise or the sophistication of the product. It is the quality of the builder.

Specifically, it is 5 qualities that appear again and again:

1️⃣ **They build for legacy, not just liquidity.** The best are optimizing for what they leave behind—the institution, the jobs, and the next generation of operators.
2️⃣ **They move with patience where others rush with noise.** African markets reward depth. Founders who take time to understand regulatory and cultural nuances consistently outperform.
3️⃣ **They invest in people before process.** They build teams with genuine contextual intelligence and trust them to operate with autonomy.
4️⃣ **They stay in the room when it gets difficult.** When regulatory shifts or market disruptions hit, they don’t exit. They sit with the difficulty until clarity emerges.
5️⃣ **They treat Africa not as a risk—but as a mandate.** They aren't here *despite* the complexity. They are here because of the opportunity.

This is the kind of builder Spica Advisory exists to serve.

Have a great Saturday. 🤝

Every wrong decision has a right advisor missing.

Sit with that for a moment.

Think about the most consequential wrong turns you have seen African businesses take - the market entry that was poorly timed, the partnership that was poorly structured, the scaling that happened before the unit economics were healthy, the pivot that came six months too late.

In almost every case, the decision was not made in bad faith. It was made by a capable founder or executive who was working with incomplete information, without someone in the room who had seen that specific situation in that specific market before.

The cost of bad counsel is not just the immediate financial loss, though that is real and often significant. It is the compounding effect of a wrong direction: the time spent recovering, the relationships strained, the market window that closed while the correction was being made, the team morale that eroded during the uncertainty.

Opportunity lost in Africa is often opportunity lost permanently. Markets move. Windows close. Competitors occupy the space. And the cost of re-entry is almost always higher than the cost of getting it right the first time.

This is the case for quality advisory; not as a luxury, but as a strategic necessity.

At Spica Advisory, we work with founders and institutions across 11 African markets to ensure that the decisions that define their ventures are made with the kind of precision, contextual intelligence, and strategic clarity that only comes from working alongside advisors who have seen the terrain.

Every wrong decision has a right advisor missing.

Make sure yours are in the room.
