GAF LAUNCHES CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS MONTH
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) launched the Cyber Security Awareness month at the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church, Burma Camp.
The Friday 30 September 2022 event under the theme ‘Regulating Cyber Security; A Public Private Sector Collaborative Approach’ was purposely to provide education on best cyber practices through capacity building and awareness creation.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama stated that Cyber Security issues has taken center stage in global discourse due to its influence in transnational, regional and international security. Modern trends and technology are evolving along with its accompanying opportunities and trends and GAF is no exception to this.
He added that Ghana is part of the countries in the world that observe the month of October as National Cyber Security Awareness month. He said the month long event seeks to intensify the capacity building and awareness creation efforts on Cyber Security, Cybercrime and educate citizens on the importance of good cyber hygiene and cyber threats practices.
He noted that, GAF is a critical component of the Ghana cyber ecosystem with cyberspace emerging has the 5th domain of warfare alongside the traditional domains of Land, Air, Sea and Space. This he said forms part of the reason terrorists was resorting to the internet as platforms to support their activities. Cyber Security has therefore become a vital part of operational effectiveness for militaries across the world.
The CDS asserted that efforts are being made for personnel of GAF to understand cyber threats and vulnerabilities and its impact on mission readiness since internet is used on a daily basis. The GAF Cyber Security Awareness month 2022 will comprise workshops, lectures, demonstration and training sessions on essentials of cyber security and education on social media by all ranks.
According to him it was the aspiration of the Military High command to sustain the awareness drive and training in cyber security best practices. He advised all ranks to be mindful of their use of social media and desist from practices that would drag the name of GAF into disrepute.
