You might be tempted to believe that keeping tabs on your team is what will get them to be productive, but truthfully exerting too much control is terrible for your team's morale.

As you swallow the pill of persistent interference, you immediately venture into micromanagement, which obviously defeats the purpose of leadership.

As unconscious as it may seem, it's important to take a step back and reassess why you have a team in the first place.

Micromanagement starts from a place of fear and a lack of trust, the belief that your team can not complete the task without your direct involvement.

As a leader at the workplace, your job is to challenge your team and the system to yield required results without micromanaging.

You have to trust that your team is doing the best they can, and when you notice unsatisfactory performance, you advise and build capacity through training without persistent control.

As difficult as it may sound, there may be few challenges as you endeavour to give autonomy and provide room for your team to step up, but ultimately, they will perform much better with greater accountability and less interference.

If you find yourself micromanaging, consider these;

◇ Reflect on your behaviour and develop an awareness of why you micromanage, and that will be your starting point.

◇ Take feedback to position you to get a handle on what your direct reports really think . A 360-degree feedback would help you to gain an inside scoop of what everyone around you thinks.

◇ Prioritize what matters and what doesn’t

◇ Talk to your team and reconcile the differences in opinions

◇ Step back slowly . Fighting the micromanaging impulse will not happen at a whimp but will require conscious awareness and effort.

Whether you're curating your resume, filling out a job application, or making a case for your own hiring at a job, honesty is crucial and a prerequisite, and here is why;

■ Regardless of your skills, expertise and unique competencies, Employers or Recruiters above all else are looking for someone they can trust, and if you kick off your application with a lie, you drastically limit your chances of being hired.

■ A background check will discover any lies about your record. It's important to come clean in your application if you've been convicted of a crime. Honesty is surely the best policy . There is a possibility that the crime on your record may or may not cost you the job, but lying about it surely will.

■ There is a high probability that you may be asked to speak about skills you don’t really have. It's very important not to list any skills you don't actually have to maintain your integrity and save you the embarrassment should you be asked to demonstrate expertise of that skillset during an interview.

■ The chances of losing your job becomes high if your lies are discovered.

■ Again, the fear of being discovered even if you get the job may be frustrating, stressful, and emotionally draining. On top of that, you may wallow in your ignorance because you can’t ask your boss or your colleagues for assistance because doing so may reveal that you aren't qualified. Worst case scenario, you could also face a forgery or fraud conviction if you're discovered depending on the gravity of your lie.

To this end, it's important to stay clear of lies and approach your Résumé with your best and truest professional self.
