What really drives SERVICE EXCELLENCE?

It’s not just processes, systems, or technical knowledge.
It’s how people think, feel, and respond especially under pressure.

CDC Consult recently delivered an Emotional Intelligence for Service Excellence training program across two cohorts for Customer Care & Business Performance (CCBP) and Customer Service Officers (CSO) at Emple Ghana.

The focus was to strengthen the human skills that directly shape customer experience and workplace interactions.

Very early in the sessions, many participants expressed confidence in their ability to manage emotions and handle difficult customers.

But as we moved into real-life scenarios, role plays, and practical exercises, a different reality emerged. That’s where the real work began.

We began to see what happens in the moment:
• Reactions instead of responses
• Listening to reply instead of listening to understand
• Professionalism challenged under pressure
And this is not unique to one organisation; it’s the reality in many workplaces. This is not a skill gap it’s an application gap. Because knowing what to do is one thing, doing it consistently especially under pressure is something else entirely.

As the training progressed, the shift became evident across both cohorts:
• From reacting emotionally to responding intentionally
• From surface listening to genuine understanding
• From routine service delivery to thoughtful customer engagement.
Because in moments of pressure, uncertainty, or conflict, it is not what you know that defines you, but how you show up. And that’s where real service excellence begins, not in policies and not in scripts. But in self-awareness, emotional control, and human connection.

If your team interacts with customers daily, here’s the uncomfortable truth: without emotional intelligence, service quality will always be inconsistent.

The real question is:
Are we developing people who know what to do? Or people who can actually do it when it matters most?

At CDC Consult, we are committed to building not just skilled teams, but emotionally intelligent professionals who deliver real impact.

Climate change in Accra is no longer a distant risk, it’s a lived reality.
From rising temperatures and rapid urbanisation to flooding, coastal erosion, and extreme heat, Accra sits at the intersection of climate vulnerability and opportunity. How we respond today will shape the city’s resilience for decades to come.
That’s why, under the Community Initiative on Gender-Sensitive Human Mobility and Climate Change, IOM Ghana, with funding from the IOM Development Fund, is partnering with Rufinlit LBG (the NGO arm of The CDC Group) to generate localised, gender-responsive evidence that reflects the lived realities of communities most affected by climate change.
The pilot is currently underway in Old Fadama, focusing on four critical areas:
1.Reducing flood risk
2.Establishing a sustainable livelihood hub
3.Building the capacity of beneficiaries
4.Developing a scalable model for the wider Accra Metropolitan Area
Through focus group discussions and community surveys, the project places voices from the frontline at the centre of climate adaptation, ensuring solutions are not only technically sound, but socially inclusive and context-driven.
This initiative goes beyond awareness. It aims to deliver practical, lasting outcomes: stronger infrastructure planning, diversified livelihoods, improved early warning systems, and enhanced social cohesion. Most importantly, the evidence generated feeds into policy and planning, strengthening the integration of human mobility and gender considerations into urban climate adaptation strategies.
Resilient cities are built when evidence meets empathy and when communities help shape the solutions.
How can cities like Accra better integrate local knowledge into climate action?
What does inclusive urban resilience look like in practice?
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Communications Community of Practice (CoP Highlights)
How do we tell impactful stories without causing harm?
That was the focus of yesterday’s 2nd Communications Community of Practice (CoP) meeting under the FIRST+II Program, hosted by CDC Group.
The session brought together partners from CapPlus, GIRSAL Ltd, African Management Institute, Ghana Microfinance Institutions Network Ghana, Opportunity International and METSS LBG around the theme:
“Ethical & Responsible Visual Storytelling for Programme Visibility.”
The discussion highlighted a critical truth: visibility should never come at the cost of dignity. Ethical storytelling is about sharing people’s stories with honesty, respect, and care, especially when working with vulnerable individuals and communities.
Why ethical storytelling matters:
It protects the people behind the stories
It builds credibility and trust for the storytellers
It aligns with our values and safeguarding standards
It leads to stronger, meaningful programme visibility
Participants explored key challenges and practical solutions, including:
Consent & Privacy: ensuring people understand and agree to how their stories are used
Misrepresentation: telling stories accurately and truthfully
Stereotyping & Bias: avoiding harmful labels and narratives
Cultural Sensitivity: respecting community norms, beliefs, and traditions
Power Dynamics: giving subjects a voice in how their stories is told
Impact & Harm: carefully considering the consequences of sharing stories
The session also addressed the use of respectful and appropriate language when referring to persons with disabilities.
Overall, it was a highly interactive meeting filled with practical insights that can be applied to our day-to-day work, reinforcing that ethical storytelling doesn’t weaken impact; it strengthens it.
We do not sell stories; we tell stories.

Temple Investments Limited , under the Financial Inclusion for Last Mile Actors (FILMA) project, engaged CDC Consult to develop comprehensive financial education training manuals and facilitate a Training of Trainers (TOT) for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) staff.
This TOT empowered CRS project officers with the skills to train Private Agriculture Service Providers (PASPs), who will deliver inclusive financial literacy sessions to rural youth, women, and persons with disabilities across Ghana.
The training focused on mastering key financial literacy concepts, using storytelling and practical facilitation techniques designed for low-literacy audiences, and supporting PASPs to address socio-economic barriers while inspiring positive behavioural change in Last Mile Actors.
FILMA is driving significant impact, equipping marginalised communities with financial skills that foster entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth.

As part of the First + II project, in collaboration with Capital Plus Exchange and the Mastercard Foundation, we are proud to support Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) in enhancing the credit appraisal skills of their teams. CDC Consult, acting as an implementing partner, recently facilitated a two-day training session with Pan African Savings and Loans, focusing on credit staff and supervisors—especially those serving clients under the Mama programme, a women-focused initiative that combines financial services with business skills training and health support to empower female entrepreneurs. The training emphasized practical application of the 5 Cs of credit (Character, Capacity, Capital, Collateral, and Conditions) and demonstrated how these principles can be effectively leveraged to strengthen portfolio quality and improve decision-making. Equipping financial institutions with the right tools and knowledge is essential for building resilient, inclusive, and financially empowered communities.
