Police have intercepted 527 parcels of suspected Indian h**p, locally known as “Volta Cocaine,” from a Hyundai cargo truck during an operation.

The drugs were reportedly concealed beneath cyber boards, diapers, and detergents in an attempt to evade detection.

Officers involved in the bust turned down a GH¢120,000 bribe and arrested a suspected middleman at the scene.

Authorities estimate the value of the seized drugs at about GH¢210,800.

Two suspects, Lawrence Osai, also known as “Mandela,” and Emmanuel Bullah, are currently in custody and assisting police with ongoing investigations.

Today, I am celebrating my father, H.E. Jerry John Rawlings. He lived a life defined by courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to Ghana. His was not a love of country expressed in words alone, but one demonstrated through sacrifice, conviction, and an unrelenting pursuit of justice. He believed deeply in the dignity of the ordinary Ghanaian and carried their hopes, struggles, and aspirations at the centre of his public life.

He taught us that leadership demands bravery, not just in moments of triumph, but especially when making difficult, unpopular choices in service of a greater good. He stood firmly for accountability, integrity, and national pride, always reminding us that Ghana must come first, above personal comfort or gain.

Though he is no longer with us, the values he embodied continue to guide and challenge us. His legacy lives on in the conversations we have about nationhood, responsibility, and service, and in the enduring belief that a just, disciplined, and united Ghana is always worth striving for.

In recognition of his immense contribution to Ghanaian music, Yaw Sarpong received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, cementing his legacy as one of the genre’s most influential trailblazers.

Ghana’s gospel music community is mourning the loss of one of its most revered figures following the death of veteran musician Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the renowned Asomafo gospel group.
Confirmation of his passing was given by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with MyJoyOnline. At the time of reporting, no official details had been released regarding the cause of death.
Yaw Sarpong’s death comes only weeks after the loss of Maame Tiwa, a prominent and long-serving member of the Asomafo group. Her passing had already cast a shadow over the gospel music fraternity, making the latest development even more painful for fans and colleagues alike.
In recent years, the celebrated musician had been dealing with prolonged health challenges, which led him to reduce his public appearances and step away periodically from performances while focusing on medical care.
Yaw Sarpong is widely credited as a pioneer of contemporary Akan gospel music. Through Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, he introduced a distinctive sound marked by rich harmonies, disciplined arrangements and lyrics firmly grounded in Christian teachings. His leadership and musical direction helped shape the identity of gospel music in Ghana for decades.
The group’s catalogue includes timeless songs such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu and Awurade Kasa, tracks that continue to feature prominently in church services and Christian gatherings across the country.

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has announced that it has arrested a key figure in the local drug trade following a major operation in Buduburam and surrounding communities in the Gomoa East Municipal of the Central Region on Friday, 16 January 2026.
The 32-year-old woman, identified as Rebecca Afia Naa Dei Kotei and popularly known as “Mother,” has long been regarded as a central player in illicit drug activities. Local opinion leaders describe her as a notorious figure who had previously evaded arrest.
The raid, part of NACOC’s nationwide campaign against drug trafficking and abuse, resulted in the seizure of suspected cannabis, tramadol, and other controlled substances, as well as items believed to be linked to drug peddling.
NACOC confirmed that the suspect had been under close surveillance due to her involvement in various drug trafficking operations.
The Commission has received numerous complaints regarding the illegal activities of the suspects currently in custody.
Officials emphasized that the arrested individuals will be processed for court in accordance with the law. NACOC further reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to making Ghana a drug-free nation.
