106 years !!! The mother of prominent Ghanaian politician and Movement for Change leader, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Mrs. Victoria Joanna Ama Amissah Kyerematen, affectionately known as Grandma Vic, celebrates her 106th birthday!
Mama Vic has been a pillar of support and inspiration throughout the life and political career of her son, Hon. Alan K. Kyerematen.
She was born in 1920 to Elizabeth Erbynn from Ejisu and Johannes Welsing from Elmina, Her father served as an Assistant Colonial Secretary, making him one of the most senior Ghanaian figures in the colonial administration before Ghana attained independence. Her maternal lineage links her directly to the Ejisu Royal family as a descendant of the former Paramount Chief, Nana Yaw Awuah.
Mama Vic trained as a teacher at the prestigious Achimota School. During her time there, she was classmates with Mrs. Adelaide Akufo-Addo (nÊe Ofori-Atta), the mother of Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Following her training, she worked as a professional educator, teaching students at the historic St. Monica's School located in Asante Mampong.
Mama Vic was married to the late Dr. A.A.Y. Kyerematen, a notable anthropologist, the Chief of Patasi in Kumasi and the founder of the Centre for National Culture in Kumasi. He served as a Commissioner for Local Government in 1966.
She had six children (three sons and three daughters) with her late husband, Dr. Alexander Atta Yaw Kyerematen. Among her children, her third son is:Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, former Minister of Trade and Industry, and founder of the Movement for Change.
