Rethinking Our Position as Civil Society Actors
When we talk about local philanthropy, I often emphasize the importance of “position” and “repositioning.”
As civil society actors, it is crucial that we pause and ask ourselves: What is our perceived position in the development space? To the people we work with, what image do we project? And to our stakeholders and constituents, what message do we consistently send?
Amidst all our advocacy, many of us still approach communities with the mindset of “we have come to help you,” instead of “we have come to collaborate with you.” This language matters because development is not about rescuing, it is about co-creating. True and lasting progress can only be achieved when development becomes inclusive, and when communities see themselves as partners, not beneficiaries.
It’s time we reposition ourselves as collaborators and partners in community development; as institutions that mobilize support locally, not just those that depend on international donors. We must start amplifying the strengths and potential of the communities we work with, rather than focusing solely on their challenges.
Let us move from harvesting weaknesses and threats to harnessing strengths and opportunities. If we truly seek sustainable development and if we want communities to rise, take ownership, and act for themselves then the conversation must shift. It is time to reflect on our current position and intentionally reposition ourselves for the future we want to see.
