Happy Birthday, Mubarak Wakaso – Ghana’s Midfield Warrior!

Today, July 25, we celebrate the birthday of one of Ghana’s most passionate and hardworking footballers – Mubarak Wakaso. Born on this day in 1990 in Tamale, Northern Ghana, Wakaso turns 35 today, and the entire footballing world, especially Ghanaians, join in wishing him a joyous and fulfilling birthday.

A True Patriot and Midfield Engine

Mubarak Wakaso is best known for his tireless work ethic, fierce tackles, and unwavering commitment whenever he dons the national colors of Ghana. From his early days playing in Ghana to making a name for himself in Europe and Asia, Wakaso’s career is a testament to perseverance, grit, and love for the game.

He has proudly represented Ghana in multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and was part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad. With over 60 caps for the Black Stars and several goals to his name—many of them spectacular—Wakaso remains one of the most respected midfielders to ever play for Ghana.

A Global Career

Wakaso’s professional career has taken him across several continents. Notable clubs include Espanyol, Villarreal, Las Palmas, Celtic FC, and Alavés, among others.

With all due respect to Yarkadika Dipantiche, the attempt to dismiss Nanton Naa & Zoosali Lana’s concerns as “fundamentally unconvincing” reflects a narrow interpretation of Dagbɔŋ’s evolving chieftaincy system. While tradition is foundational, the lived experiences and legitimate concerns of sub-chiefs like Naa Aduna must not be so easily brushed aside.
First, while it is true that the Yaa-Naa holds the ultimate authority to enskin chiefs, this authority has never operated in a vacuum. It has always been exercised within a context of fairness, consultation, and recognition of customary contributions and lineage ties. Naa Aduna's remarks, rather than questioning the Yaa-Naa’s authority, draw attention to what many see as a broader cardinal issue of imbalance and gate representation a concern that resonates with many within Dagbɔŋ.
Regarding lineage, the assertion that Nanton Naa & Zoosali Lana’s ancestry disqualifies him from identifying with the Abudu gate is historically debatable. The descendants of Zangbaliŋ Naa Aduna like those of Abdulai Naɣabiɛɣu and Andani Girilɔŋ are all legitimate royals. To suggest that his lineage somehow places him outside the recognized gates of his preference undermines the inclusive nature of royal descent in Dagbɔŋ becauseit is matter of choice.
On the matter of the Nanton regency and the Voɣu skin, tradition is not static. The fact that the current Vo-Naa, Alhaji Saaka, was the first regent of Nanton to occupy that skin reflects a precedent being set not one that permanently excludes others from similar recognition. If for anything, Naa Aduna's argument promotes equity and seeks to encourage broader participation from deserving royals.
Finally, to label his concerns as “disrespect” to the Yaa-Naa is an unfortunate misreading. Raising critical issues within the framework of tradition does not equate to ingratitude. Rather, it is a sign of concern for the long-term harmony and balance within Dagbɔŋ. Constructive criticism especially when coming from someone who has benefited from the system is often more credible than silence.
Dagbɔŋ’s greatness lies in its ability to evolve while respecting tradition. Dismissing voices like Nanton Naa/Zoosali Lana’s may silence uncomfortable truths, but it does not address them.
