GSCC Signs MoU with MoTIE to Advance Digital Skills and E-Commerce for MSMEs

The Gambia Startup Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE) to implement the Digital Literacy and E-Commerce Capacity Building Programme for MSMEs under the World Bank’s West Africa Regional Digital Integration Program (WARDIP).

As one of the selected implementing chambers, GSCC will support the delivery of this 2026–2028 programme, which aims to equip 250 MSMEs with essential skills in digital literacy, digital finance and e-commerce.

For the first phase in 2026, 100 beneficiaries will be trained and supported to become e-commerce ready, through three training cohorts across the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) and Lower River Region (LRR).

With this support for the 2026 phase, this partnership marks another important step towards building a more digitally empowered, competitive and inclusive MSME ecosystem in The Gambia.

GSCC and TGSB Strengthen Knowledge in Good Hygienic Practices

Gambia Startup Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) in partnership with The Gambia Standards Bureau (TGSB), yesterday conducted a one-day Awareness Training on Good Hygienic Practices for members in the Food related sector.

The training targeted GSCC registered businesses operating in the food sector, providing participants with practical knowledge on food hygiene and safety practices, quality assurance, standards compliance, consumer protection and certification.
For businesses in the food industry, maintaining good hygienic practices ins essential to ensuring that products are safe, consistent and of good quality.

TURN FARM PRODUCTS INTO MARKET-READY PRODUCTS

SIE FUND LAUNCHES WINDOW 3 (STARTUP GRANT) FOR GAMBIAN YOUTH

Banjul, The Gambia – The Skills, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SIE) Fund, under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), has announced a new Call for Proposals under its Startup Support Window. This initiative aims to empower young Gambian entrepreneurs by providing financial support, mentorship, and incubation services to turn innovative business ideas into thriving enterprises.

The Startup Support Window is part of the World Bank-funded Gambia Resilience, Inclusion, Skills, and Equity (RISE) Project, a five-year initiative designed to increase foundational skills, provide job-relevant training, and boost income-generating opportunities across The Gambia. Through this window, the SIE Fund will support 75 startups annually with grants ranging from $2,000 to $2,758 per startup, in addition to coaching, mentorship, and incubation services.

Who Can Apply

To qualify for funding, applicants must:

• Be Gambian citizens between the ages of 18 and 35
• Have a business formally registered with the Registrar of Companies in The Gambia
• Present an innovative business idea with strong growth potential
• Submit a comprehensive business plan with market research and financial projections
• Demonstrate commitment, capability, and operational readiness
Priority will be given to beneficiaries of Window 2 of the SIE Fund, who have previously participated in skills training or internship programmes.

Priority Sectors

The Fund is particularly interested in startups operating in sectors aligned with The Gambia’s Recovery Focused National Development Plan (2023–2027), including:

• Agriculture
• Engineering
• Tourism
• Business
• Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
• Creative and Performing Arts
What Support Is Offered

Successful applicants will receive:

• Financial Support: Competitive grants for product development, marketing, equipment acquisition, and operational costs
• Technical Assistance: Mentorship and coaching from experienced business advisors and industry experts
• Incubation Services: Access to co-working spaces, infrastructure, and networking opportunities
Application Process

The application process involves multiple stages:

1. Submission of a detailed business proposal
2. Evaluation and shortlisting
3. Pitching event where shortlisted applicants present their ideas to a panel of judges
4. Notification and award of grants
The SIE Fund Secretariat will also organise online engagement workshops to help aspiring entrepreneurs develop business plans, manage finances, and improve pitching techniques.

All proposals must be submitted online and include a schedule of activities and a detailed implementation budget.

• Proposals that do not comply with the terms of this call will be disregarded
• The SIE Fund may request adjustments or additional clarifications; failure to respond within five working days will result in elimination

GSCC Members Complete Women’s Entrepreneurship Capacity-Building Seminar in China

Two members of the Gambia Startup Chamber of Commerce (GSCC), through the Gambia Women’s Chamber Of Commerce (GWCC), have successfully completed a two-week capacity-building seminar on Women’s Employment and Entrepreneurship for English-Speaking African Countries in China.

The seminar, held from 4–17 August 2026 in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and organized by Shandong Foreign Trade Vocational College.

The programme brought together participants from English-speaking African countries to strengthen knowledge and skills in women’s employment, entrepreneurship development, business growth, and related areas.

The participation of GSCC members provided an opportunity to gain valuable insights, exchange experiences with participants from across Africa, and explore lessons that can contribute to strengthening support for women entrepreneurs and businesses in The Gambia.

GSCC is grateful for the opportunity and looks forward to applying the knowledge and experiences gained to further support women-led businesses and entrepreneurship development in The Gambia.

On Friday, 14 August, the Gambia Startup Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) participated in the Validation Workshop for The Gambia's National Apprenticeship Policy, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education,Research Science and Technology.

Held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center, the workshop brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, TVET institutions, development partners, industry and private sector to review and strengthen the draft policy.

As one of the representatives of the private sector, GSCC values the opportunity to contribute to discussions aimed at strengthening the link between skills development and the labour market, creating pathways for young Gambians to gain practical experience and improve their employability and entrepreneurial potential.

GSCC remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote skills development, entrepreneurship and meaningful opportunities for young people in The Gambia.
