The compressive strength test of concrete is one of the most important tests in civil engineering. It measures how much load a concrete specimen can withstand before failing in compression. Here’s a clear breakdown:

🔹 Purpose

To determine the compressive strength of hardened concrete.

To check whether the concrete mix meets the design requirements.

To ensure quality control in construction.

🔹 Test Specimens

Cube specimens (usually 150 × 150 × 150 mm) – common in Europe & Asia.

Cylinder specimens (usually 150 mm diameter × 300 mm height) – common in the U.S. and some other regions.

🔹 Equipment Needed

Concrete cube/cylinder molds

Compression testing machine (CTM)

Tamping rod or vi****or for compaction

Curing tank or moist curing room

🔹 Procedure

1. Preparation of Specimens

Fresh concrete is poured into the mold in 2–3 layers.

Each layer is compacted with a tamping rod or vibration.

The surface is leveled and finished.

2. Curing

Specimens are kept in a curing tank or moist room at ~27°C.

Standard curing period: 7 days, 14 days, and 28 days (most important is 28 days).

3. Testing

Remove specimen from curing and wipe excess water.

Place in compression testing machine, centered properly.

Apply load gradually at a rate of 140 kg/cm² per minute (or ~0.6 MPa/s) until failure.

4. Result

Record the maximum load at failure (P).

Calculate compressive strength:

fc = {P}/{A}

where:

fc = compressive strength (N/mm² or MPa)

P = maximum load applied (N)

A = cross-sectional area of specimen (mm²)

🔹 Typical Values

Ordinary concrete: 20–40 MPa (N/mm²)

High-strength concrete: 60–100 MPa or more

🔹 Notes

Strength at 7 days is about 65–70% of 28-day strength.

Proper curing is crucial to achieve target strength.

Failure usually occurs as vertical cracking and crushing.
