Managing employees in Hong Kong? Your MPF contributions could have valuable tax benefits.

Mandatory and eligible voluntary MPF contributions may be tax-deductible, which can help reduce taxable profits and support more efficient payroll and tax planning.

For employers operating in Hong Kong, understanding how MPF tax deductions work is an important part of managing salary costs and business liabilities.

Follow us for more practical insights on Hong Kong payroll, MPF, employment and business tax.

IRD confirmed it. Your 2025/26 tax bill just got smaller.

For the year of assessment 2025/26, profits tax, salaries tax, and personal assessment all get a one-off 100% reduction, capped at $3,000 per case. If you run more than one business, each business gets its own separate $3,000 cap on profits tax.

No extra paperwork needed. File your tax return as usual. IRD applies the reduction automatically when they finalize your assessment.

One thing to keep in mind: this doesn't change your provisional tax deadline. That's still due on time regardless.

Hong Kong just handed out its first 2 stablecoin issuer licences.

On 10 April 2026, the HKMA approved HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial (a joint venture of Standard Chartered Hong Kong, HKT, and Animoca Brands), chosen from 36 applications submitted under the Stablecoins Ordinance (Cap. 656). Both are planning to issue HKD-referenced stablecoins, with launches expected later in 2026.

Here's the part most people miss: a licence isn't a live product. Neither stablecoin is available to use yet. And the HKMA has already warned the public to watch for scams falsely claiming ties to these two companies.

For Hong Kong founders in fintech, payments, or Web3, this matters because the city now has a real, regulated path for building on top of a licensed stablecoin issuer, not just watching from the sidelines.

We've broken down the full story, the licensing bar (HK$25 million minimum paid-up capital, 100% reserve backing), and what it means for your business in the carousel above.

Quick tax myth-buster for anyone running a Hong Kong company with overseas income 👇

If you've paid corporate tax on profits earned abroad, you can't just deduct that foreign tax like a normal business expense in your HK accounts. The IRD sees it as a charge on your profits, not a cost of doing business, so a straight deduction gets disallowed.

The relief you're actually entitled to depends on whether HK has a double tax agreement (CDTA) with that country:

If there IS a treaty, you claim a tax credit under section 50 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

If there ISN'T one, you may be able to deduct the foreign tax under section 16(1)(ca), but only with documentary proof, and only if the same income is also chargeable to HK profits tax.

As of July 2026, Hong Kong has signed CDTAs with 59 jurisdictions, so it's worth checking the IRD's list before assuming you're in the "no treaty" camp.

This trips up a lot of SMEs trading cross-border, so save this post and share it with a business partner who deals with overseas clients. Questions about your specific situation? Send us a message — Cheap Incorporation Ltd

Hong Kong hasn't seen export growth like this in almost 40 years.

In June 2026, exports grew 53.4% year-on-year, hitting HK$641.1 billion in a single month. The last time growth topped 50% in a month was back in March 1987. The driver this time is different though: global demand for AI-related electronics, with exports to Asia, the Chinese Mainland, and the US all accelerating.

It's not an isolated spike either. GDP grew 4.3% in the second quarter, on top of 5.9% in the first. First-half exports for 2026 came in at HK$3,416.0 billion, up 39.1% on the year before.

Revised GDP figures for Q2 are due out on August 14.

If you run a business here, or you're weighing whether to set one up, this is the kind of context worth knowing. We'll keep tracking it. Follow along or drop a comment if you want our take on what it means for you.

Thinking about relocating your BVI, Cayman, Luxembourg, or Bermuda company? Hong Kong's new Re-Domiciliation Regime makes it easier than ever. 🇭🇰💼

As of H1 2026 alone, 70 companies have applied and 42 have successfully moved their legal home to Hong Kong, including major listed and insurance companies.

If you are looking to expand into Asian markets while preserving your company’s history, here is everything you need to know:

❓ What is the Hong Kong Re-Domiciliation Regime?
It is a formal legal pathway allowing foreign companies to transfer their domicile to Hong Kong. No winding up is required so your existing contracts, identity, rights, and obligations remain fully intact. There is also no re-incorporation needed: You simply transfer your legal home.

🚀 Key Advantages of Moving to Hong Kong
Streamlined Banking Access: Tap into premier financial institutions (like HSBC) and top-tier professional services.

Strategic Growth: Gain immediate proximity to Mainland China and broader Asian markets backed by a robust tax treaty network.

Flexible Qualifications: Private & public companies limited by shares (and unlimited companies with share capital) qualify.

Debunking the Myth: You do NOT need a massive office or staff count to qualify. Companies of all sizes are eligible.

⚖️ Tax & Compliance Breakdown
Pre-Move Tax Exemption: Zero Hong Kong profits tax applies to your pre-move operating period (if you had no HK business prior).

No Stamp Duty: Re-domiciliation itself does not trigger stamp duty.

🤝 How We Can Help
Navigating multi-jurisdictional compliance can be complex but it doesn't have to be. We handle the entire re-domiciliation process, Companies Registry filings, and post-move compliance so you can focus on scaling.

If you're running an online business and still relying only on a traditional bank account for cross-border payments, this is worth a read.

Traditional banks can be slow and expensive for international transfers, sometimes charging up to 5% between fees and FX markup. That's why a lot of global businesses have shifted to what's called "alternative banking": financial services from non-bank providers like neo banks, payment service providers (PayPal, Stripe), stablecoins, and e-money institutions.

Each one solves a different problem:

Need a multi-currency account? Neo banks or EMIs.
Running an e-commerce checkout? PSPs are built for that.
Need near-instant settlement with no FX fees? Stablecoins are worth a look (though they come with their own regulatory uncertainty.)

The right choice really comes down to three things: what you actually need it for, what it really costs once you factor in FX markup (not just the advertised fee), and whether the provider is properly licensed in every country you operate in.

We put together a full breakdown in the carousel above. Take a look and let us know in the comments which of these you're already using for your business. Always happy to talk through what might work best for your specific setup. Send us a message and we'll walk you through it!

Can you do your own bookkeeping without hiring an accountant? 🤓

Yes! And here's exactly what your software needs to make that possible.

1️⃣ Why use bookkeeping software instead of an accountant?
It cuts accounting costs and gives you real-time visibility into your own numbers, without waiting on anyone else's timeline.

2️⃣ What is IFRS, and why does it matter?
IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) is the global accounting framework followed by over 168 countries. Software that's IFRS-compliant makes your financial statements comparable and credible — which matters the moment an investor asks to see your books.

3️⃣ What reports should your bookkeeping software generate?
Any tool worth using should produce all 5 of these: Balance Sheet, Statement of Changes in Equity, Statement of Cash Flows, Profit & Loss Statement, and General Ledger. If it's missing even one, it's not built for real compliance.

4️⃣Xero vs QuickBooks vs Wave. Which one should you choose?
Xero — from $90/month, clean UI, multi-currency support
QuickBooks — from $300/month, live bookkeeping support
Wave — free (freemium), built for freelancers and e-commerce

5️⃣ Can you learn this without an accounting background?
Yes. Xero offers free certification from beginner to expert. And Wave connects you directly with real bookkeepers when you need extra support.

You don't need an accounting degree to understand your own business. You just need the right tool. 🪛

Still not sure which platform fits your stage of business? Send us a message! We're happy to point you in the right direction.
