🌈 What is the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme?
Hong Kong residents, did you know? The Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme offers you a quality choice for hospitalization insurance. Participating insurance companies, known as "product providers," offer individually reimbursed hospitalization insurance products (known as "approved products") that are recognized and meet the minimum requirements set by the Department of Health.
💡 Objectives of the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme?
1⃣ To enhance the level of protection of hospitalization insurance products
2⃣ To provide an additional choice for residents to utilize private medical services through hospitalization insurance
3⃣ In the long run, to help reduce the pressure on public hospitals
🌈 What Coverage Do Approved Products Include?
1⃣ Treatment for congenital diseases: Includes conditions that occur or are diagnosed after age 8
2⃣ Day surgeries: For example, endoscopies performed at day surgery centers are covered
3⃣ Specified diagnostic imaging tests: Such as CT scans, MRI scans, etc. (with 30% coinsurance)
4⃣ Specified non-surgical cancer treatments: Including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, etc.
5⃣ Psychiatric hospitalization in local hospitals: Up to HK$30,000 reimbursement per policy year
💡 How to Become a Product Provider for the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme?
Before offering approved products in the market, all insurance companies must first register successfully with the Department of Health as a product provider for the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (and obtain a registration number). Like all other insurance businesses, these product providers are strictly supervised and regulated by the Insurance Authority under the Insurance Ordinance. In addition, they must adhere to the rules set by the scheme, including product compliance requirements and codes of practice.
