There are miscommunication across generations. How can we bridge the gap?

A Simulation Program organized by an NGO called “Eldpathy” is awesome in bridging this gap. During the program young participants are asked to dress up to resemble the health condition of the elderly people. Some elderly people are trained to be the program trainers. Each participant is leaded by an elderly trainer to do various daily activities that an elderly person encounters. To incorporate the idea of “Putting yourself in the others’ shoes” has been inspiring. The program has been well recieved by the participants.
Managers and peer coaches, this would be a good way to enhance mutual communication at work. Would you like to implement?

What is special about this picture?

It was taken on this Wed at 8pm, the first day where dine-in service is banned in Hong Kong. This is a busy taxi stand in front of a luxury office tower at the city centre, where you can experience Hong Kong’s premier lifestyle. Usually there are passengers lined up waiting for taxis. It is rarely seen such a long queue of taxi waiting for customers.

Life is full of changes. Good time won’t last forever. We need to be alert and prepare for times of adversity, needn’t we?

Audrey Tang has come to my attention when I was reading the news on how different countries responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Her story is indeed legendary.

According to the web information, Tang is a free software programmer. She has been described as one of the “ten great Taiwanese computing personalities. Tang has an IQ of 180 and acquired her knowledge through self-taught. She showed interest in computer in early age and started to learn Perl programming at age 12. She was unable to adapt to the student life and dropped out of school at age 14. At age 19 she became an entrepreneur at the Silicon Valley, California. She earned her first bucket of gold by continuously forming and selling her start-ups. At age 24 she transitioned from a man to a woman and retired at age 33. In 2016 at the age 35, she was invited to join the Taiwan Executive Yuan as the Digital Minister. She became the youngest, first transgender official in Taiwan’s top executive cabinet.

Tang did not belong to any political party. She said that, “My presence will not be for certain government communities to have easy access to the administration, nor for ‘policy announcement’ on the internet. Rather, it will be a ‘channel’ for better combination of wisdom and power.” Tang was tasked to make the government more transparent. She has made the big data available for all in real time and bridged the gap between the old and young generations through the development of free softwares and communication platforms.

The Taiwan Government has been “Brave and Innovative” in recruiting Tang as their Digital Minister. She has no political background, dropped out from high school and without work experience in the Government. Yet she has been given the opportunity to apply what she knows in digital technology and she has done remarkably well.

With the success story of Audrey Tang, it is inspired that Giving Opportunities to talents who show interest with aligned vision and willing to contribute, regardless of their qualification and experience, will be the innovative strategy in talent acquisition and development.

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan has done very well. As of May 19, there were only 440 confirmed cases, 398 recovered and 7 deaths. There is no complete lockdown in the island. Schools and businesses continue to operate as normal.

Taiwan has demonstrated effective responses to the crisis using digital technology. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Government immediately implement border control to prevent new developments of the pandemic from abroad. Its Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) held daily press conference to keep the citizens informed of the current situation. They also actively implement screening, testing, contact tracing and enforcing quarantines to identify confirmed or unconfirmed cases. People in Taiwan are asked to follow the guidelines of wearing surgical masks and practise social distancing in a serious manner. They utilized open data to keep the people informed of the mask inventories in real time. To ensure masks for all, the Government coordinated across different industries to boost the daily mask production from 1.8 million to 15 million. While keeping the masks to self sufficient level, they also donate medical masks and other medical supplies to various countries in need.

What are the reasons for Taiwan to achieve such a good result? Their Digital Minister Audrey Tang shared in the Digital Social Innovation in April that "with the mutual trust and open communication between the Government and the citizen, Fast-Fair-Fun are the keys to success." That is to act FAST in response to the changing situation, to be FAIR in the implementation and to bring in FUN at times whenever appropriate.

Whether you are a leader in business organizations or nonprofits, at home or at work, establish a mutual trust environment, facilitate open communication and apply Fast-Fair-Fun in problem solving, you will be heading towards the road for success.

When a child is born, every mother will wish their children a Happy and Healthy life. What is the success formula to be happy and healthy? The Grant Study by Harvard University on Adult Development may give you the answer.

This is the longest research run in adult development since 1938 with 4 generations of researchers. 268 Harvard sophomores were studied from their age of 19 till the end of their lives. President John K. Kennedy was among the original recruits. In the 1970s, 456 Boston inner-city residents were included in the study. Their mental and physical health, world war II experience, work, relationships, aging and retirement were studied. The data are collected through questionnaires in every two years, medical and psychiatric examinations in every five years, interviews with researchees and their wives in every 10 years. As of now 60 researchees are still alive.

The areas to explore are:
• How important are our childhoods in predicting how we age?
• Is the die cast by mid-life, or can we still affect how we get old?
• Who retires, who enjoys it and why?
• Is life all basically downhill from here?

According to Prof. Robert Waldinger, the fourth research director of the Grant Study, Good Relationship is most critical to health and happiness in life.
