The recent 𝐈𝐅𝐋𝐀 𝐌𝐄𝐃-𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 in Split was more than just a gathering of landscape architects – it was a dynamic exchange on how we protect our coastal heritage in a changing climate.

As we mark , this dialogue feels more urgent than ever. Under the theme "Our Power, Our Planet," we are reminded that collective effort is the key to ensuring a livable future.

As a partner in the event, PAP/RAC contributed by bridging the gap between policy and action:

🔹 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 #𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 – the Protocol serves as the foundation for sustainable coastal management

🔹 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 – through the platform, now evolving into , we showcased adaptation in practice: from Šibenik-Knin County (Croatia) and Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro) to the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region in Morocco

🔹 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 – we presented our guidelines on Nature–based Solutions for adaptation to climate change in different coastal typologies of the Mediterranean.

Building coasts requires more than data 💡

As coastal areas continue to change, understanding how land cover is evolving — and what that means for ecosystems and communities — is essential.

This is where Common Indicator 25 (CI25) comes in, providing a harmonised framework to assess coastal land cover change across the region.

Through targeted capacity-building initiatives, PAP/RAC works with national experts to ensure that CI25 is not only applied but translated into informed coastal planning and action.

As part of the Child Project 2.1, we developed a technical manual offering step-by-step guidance for calculating CI25 using free and open-source software and open data.

Last week, the PAP/RAC team joined national institutions and coastal stakeholders for three days of productive discussions 💡

Participants worked through key elements of the draft ICZM Strategy and Law, as well as the Integrated Management Plan for the Damour area, developed under Child Project 2.1.

The consultations provided a valuable opportunity to review proposed measures collectively and agree on clear priorities through engaging participatory methods.

We would like to thank our partners at Plan Bleu for leading the Climagine workshop, and Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med), who leads the IMP Damour.
We also thank our group of national experts and all Lebanese colleagues for their valuable contributions throughout the sessions.

Working with nature to build climate resilience 🌿

From 9–12 December 2025, the Deputy Director of PAP/RAC took part in the SPA RAC Climate & Biodiversity Workshop in Türkiye, contributing to discussions on how coastal areas can adapt to climate change through practical, nature-based approaches.

Key messages from the workshop:

🔸As Mediterranean coasts face risks such as erosion, flooding, heatwaves, and ecosystem degradation, climate planning is essential
🔸Nature-based Solutions ( ) offer effective and adaptable options for climate adaptation, benefiting both ecosystems and communities
🔸Regional cooperation plays a key role in strengthening across the Mediterranean
🔸Conservation is a shared responsibility

Along with , last week was also marked by the Incore-Med Democracy Lab training — a key step toward the 2026 workshop in the City of Kaštela, .

💡 Through the participatory approach that places local communities at the heart of decision-making, the project will work to address the environmental pressures affecting Kaštela’s coastal area.
