Innothyrogen Horizon Europe Project

Innothyrogen Horizon Europe Project Innovating Thyroid Health with Genomics and Predictive Algorithms through Collaborative Excellence Our goal?

InnoThyroGen is a Horizon Europe project coordinated by the University of Split School of Medicine. The project aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, and thyroid cancer. Since many patients remain undiagnosed or face challenges with existing treatments, the project focuses on a personal

ized approach to care. By combining advanced genetic analyses, digital tools, and artificial intelligence, InnoThyroGen is developing innovative solutions for more accurate diagnosis and more effective therapies. Better care and healthier lives for millions across Europe. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101187880.

🦋 May is recognised worldwide as Thyroid Awareness Month - a time dedicated to raising awareness about thyroid diseases, prevention, early detection, and the importance of thyroid health.

World Thyroid Day is officially marked on May 25, but throughout the entire month our partner the Croatian Thyroid Association (Hrvatska udruga za bolesti štitnjače) has been actively organising public-awareness activities across Croatia.

As part of this year’s campaign, the Croatian Thyroid Association organised:
🚶‍♀️ the public-health walk “Walk for a Healthy Thyroid” from Zagreb to Velika Gorica, and
📍 a public-awareness event in Zagreb during the official World Thyroid Awareness Day campaign.

During both events, visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the InnoThyroGen project through conversations, educational materials, and dissemination activities focused on genomics-based and personalised approaches to thyroid health. 🧬

These initiatives helped bring science and public engagement closer to the community while raising awareness about thyroid diseases, prevention, and personalised medicine. 💙

🎓 Webinar Announcement: Step-by-step systematic reviews

Join us for an upcoming webinar:
“Step-by-step systematic reviews: Turning questions into reliable evidence”

👩‍🏫 Speaker: Andrea Gelemanović, PhD (University of Split School of Medicine)

This session will guide participants through the key steps of designing and conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, from formulating precise research questions and building search strategies, to evaluating study quality and synthesising evidence into clear, reliable conclusions.

Participants will also gain insights into widely used tools and frameworks such as PROSPERO, PRISMA, and the Cochrane Database, along with common challenges including publication bias and reproducibility.

🔙 Throwback to Science in the Passage (Znanost u prolazu)

On March 7, InnoThyroGen was part of this vibrant public science event on the Split Riva, bringing research closer to citizens through open dialogue and accessible talks 🌿

👩‍🔬 Dr. Nikolina Pleić presented how statistics and genetics help us better understand thyroid diseases, from analysing large-scale datasets to improving risk prediction and enabling personalised approaches in healthcare.

👩‍🔬 Dr. Andrea Gelemanović explored how bioinformatics and computational biology uncover hidden molecular patterns behind ageing, chronic inflammation and complex diseases, opening the door to earlier detection and prevention.

The event gathered citizens of all ages and created a space for meaningful exchange between scientists and the public, exactly the kind of engagement that drives the impact of research forward.

👏 We’re proud that this initiative contributed to increasing the visibility of the InnoThyroGen project and highlighting the importance of genomics, data science and personalised medicine in modern healthcare.

Thyroid Health Event Successfully Held in Split 🔬

On April 20, 2026, a lecture and round table on thyroid health were held at the “Zlatna vrata” Cinema in Split as part of the Festival of Science 2026.

The event was organised by the Croatian Association of Young Doctors – Split branch (AMZH Split) in cooperation with the Croatian Medical Association – Split branch (HLZ Split) and the Cultural and Lifelong Learning Centre “Zlatna vrata”.

The lecture “Modern diagnostics and treatment of the most common thyroid diseases” was delivered by Assistant Professor Dubravka Brdar, MD, PhD, who presented the latest approaches in diagnosis and treatment, with a focus on personalised medicine and genetics 🧬

This was followed by a round table “Thyroid: Your Energy Control Centre” 💬, featuring:

Assistant Professor Dubravka Brdar, MD, PhD (Klinički Bolnički Centar Split)
Professor Tatijana Zemunik, MD, PhD (University of Split School of Medicine)
Dr. Nikolina Pleić (University of Split School of Medicine)
Volga Družijanić

The discussion was moderated by Associate Professor Anamarija Jurčev Savičević, MD, PhD (Nastavni zavod za javno zdravstvo Splitsko-dalmatinske županije)

The event highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and collaboration, as thyroid disorders affect an estimated 10–12% of the population.

Through events like this, InnoThyroGen continues to strengthen the connection between science, healthcare and society 🤝
