🎧 Soil-X-Change Podcast — Episode 2

In the second episode of the Soil-X-Change podcast, we focus on crop diversification and intercropping as key practices for improving soil health and farm resilience.

Joined by Anna Gołdys, the conversation explores how combining different crops can support soil functions, improve nutrient cycling and strengthen agricultural systems both above and below ground.

The episode highlights how plant diversity can help build healthier soils, support biodiversity and create more stable farming systems under changing climate conditions.

🌱 More diverse fields mean more resilient soils — and stronger, more sustainable agriculture.

From practice to real life through sustainable and circular solutions 🌱♻️

A big thank you to everyone who joined our joint webinar organized by Soil-X-Change, -KNOW, and Therbn EU Project projects. It was inspiring to see such an engaging discussion connecting researchers, advisors, farmers, and innovation actors from across Europe.
The webinar highlighted an important message: innovation alone is not enough ➡️ successful uptake depends on how knowledge is translated into practical, locally relevant solutions for farmers.
Some of the key reflections from the discussion:
🔹 Farmers trust practical evidence and peer exchange more than general recommendations.
🔹 There is still a significant gap between awareness of sustainable practices and their real implementation on farms.
🔹 Advisory services and “translation” of scientific knowledge into practical farmer language are essential.
🔹 Knowledge-sharing approaches are evolving ➡️ from digital dashboards and databases to demonstration farms and community-based learning platforms.
🔹 Main barriers to adoption remain economic risks, complexity of knowledge, fragmented data frameworks, and regulatory uncertainty.
🔹 Circular solutions such as biochar, vermicomposting, efficient water management, valorisation of agricultural by-products, and precision nutrient management attracted strong interest.
Thank you our speakers Barbara Pápai (innomine group); Anna Bagó Mas, PhD, Nicos Larkos ( -KNOW); Edelbis López Dávila, Laura Silici (Therbn EU Project), Eric Bönecke; Alexandra Gkouma

One of the strongest conclusions of the webinar was that long-term collaboration and cross-border knowledge exchange are key to scaling sustainable and circular agriculture in Europe. 🔄🌱🤝
Thank you once again to all speakers and participants — we look forward to continuing the exchange and building further synergies together.

🌾 Forage mixtures for more resilient pastures 🌱

🌿 Healthy pastures often start with plant diversity.

Forage mixtures combine different grasses, legumes and sometimes herbs in the same field. Instead of relying on one plant species, farmers use several species that grow and function in complementary ways.

This practice was implemented in Italy within the PASCHINRES project.

🌱 What makes this approach useful?
Each plant species contributes differently to the system. Some improve soil fertility, others develop deep roots or provide good soil cover.

🌼 Why do they matter?

Well-designed forage mixtures can:

✅ Improve soil structure with diverse root systems
✅ Increase soil organic matter over time
✅ Improve water retention and drought tolerance
✅ Reduce the need for nitrogen fertilisers thanks to legumes
✅ Provide more stable and nutritious feed for animals

🌾 By increasing plant diversity, forage mixtures help build stronger pastures and healthier soils.

🌱 Innovation Broker of the Month: Anna Gołdys 🇵🇱

Crop diversification and intercropping are key practices for building more resilient and sustainable farming systems. By growing different crops together, farmers can improve soil structure, support biodiversity and make better use of natural resources.

Working in this field, Anna Gołdys highlights how plant diversity below the surface plays a crucial role in strengthening agricultural systems:
“What makes crops resilient starts underground, where different roots grow together.”

🌿 Diverse cropping systems help create healthier soils, improve nutrient cycling and support more stable yields under changing climate conditions.

🌱 Soil-X-Change at the AKIS Advisors Platform event in Spain

Through our Spanish partner AMBIENTA Soil-X-Change participated in the event “The Agricultural Advisor as the Cornerstone of AKIS in Spain and Europe”, organised within the framework of the AKIS Advisors Platform and the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
The event highlighted the strategic role of agricultural advisory services in strengthening knowledge transfer, innovation and the sustainable transition of the agri-food sector. It also provided a valuable opportunity to connect Soil-X-Change with other Horizon Europe initiatives such as , , , and -Rangeland, exploring potential synergies around soil health, sustainable fertilisation, digital tools and advisory services within AKIS.
This event allows us to continue building bridges between knowledge, innovation, consultants and regions across Europe.

🌱 Stronger Together for Healthy Soils: Soil-X-Change meets ! 🤝
We are establishing a new synergy between Soil-X-Change and the Horizon Europe project, . This collaboration focuses on our shared mission: to protect and restore European soils.
Both projects share a core passion: the Soil. While Soil-X-Change focuses on creating an EU-wide network to accelerate the practical implementation of innovative solutions from EIP-AGRI Operational Groups, MultiSoil is creating tools to improve sustainable practices. There practices are being tested in fields with key crops, such as potato, sugarbeet, wheat, maize and olives.

🌿 Poultry grazing in orchards and fields 🐔

🌱 Regenerative farming can also include animals — even small ones like chickens.

Poultry grazing means letting chickens move across orchards or fields where they can forage naturally. As they search for insects and plants, they also fertilise the soil with their manure and help manage vegetation.

This practice was implemented in Italy within the IESS project.

🌾 How does it work?
Chickens are moved regularly between different areas so that the vegetation has time to recover. While grazing, they feed on insects, seeds and grass, and naturally return nutrients to the soil.

🌼 Why does it matter?
Even small flocks can support healthier farming systems:

✅ Natural fertilisation through manure
✅ Reduction of weeds and some pests
✅ More active and biologically rich soils
✅ Better integration of crops and livestock
✅ Additional farm products such as eggs or meat

🌱 When well managed, poultry grazing can support soil health while adding diversity to the farm.
