For us, Alaya Suites is more than just a project, it marks a transition in our design approach. Previously, we explored a more modern tropical language, but the strong character of Ubud encouraged us to shift toward a contemporary interpretation of vernacular architecture. This can be seen in the use of thatch ceilings, patterned stonework, and wood as key elements of the project, bringing a stronger sense of texture, craftsmanship, and locality into the design. For us, style should never be rigid; it should evolve and adapt to different contexts while the design DNA remains the same.

Although only 80 sqm in size, Less House became an important exercise for us. The project allowed us to explore knock-down structures and panelized construction systems, where material dimensions became a key driver of the design. Budget constraints encouraged simpler detailing and more efficient construction methods, while the compact site challenged us to carefully balance built space and open space. For us, Less House is a small-scale project that tested ideas and principles that continue to inform our larger works today.

We were invited to join a private competition for an apartment and co-living project, and we finish in 4th place. What we really remember about the jury brief was one simple statement: no landscape in the renderings. Rare to see, and honestly we agree, sometimes what we need is just pure architecture and showing space. That enough.

A tree that has stood there long before the project existed

it carries the memory of the place. It tells you about the soil, the climate, the scale. It tells you where the shade falls and where people will naturally want to gather.
So we designed from it. The pool frames it. The space opens toward it. The whole project acknowledges it.

We listen to the site before we draw anything.
